Hm.

From One Piece Vol. 50 SBS:

D: Here's my question: on p.80 of Volume 42, Sanji says "I was raised to never kick a woman." Would that have been a lesson from Zeff the Chef? Would that mean Zeff is very soft on women, as well? Tell me. from Ariga-san ( Read more... )

That response from Oda has always confused me. I thought I got it just the way it seemed initially, when Sanji said he wouldn't/couldn't kick a woman even if it killed him. I thought it was a marvelous blend of both the ideas Oda seems to be trying to separate now, with his pride being incredibly hurt by this defeat but at the same time sticking to his principle that to him was more important in spite of the blow to his ego. Now it's way less interesting with the implication that there's some physical prevention of him harming a woman. Just meh. I haven't been enjoying some of the peeks into Sanji's psyche Oda's been giving us lately (ie: the Absolam fight), it seems like he's abruptly moving in a direction that makes him less self-contradictory and interesting. Instead of being a horny, lovestruck goober as well as a chivalrous gentleman, now it's like he's just this horny loser who'd be an even bigger pervert/jackass if he could only get away with it. MUCH less interesting than the guy I thought I was reading for all those

This is actually bothering me big-time because Oda's response blatantly contradicts the actual characterization in the manga. It's like he's misreading his own character! I tried applying this interpretation to some of Sanji's actions and words, and you'd have to reach pretty far to make it actually work.

Agreed though on recent characterization. His contradictory behavior and chivalry are so much more interesting and sympathetic when they aren't being played for laughs. I really am curious to see what he'll be like after he returns to normal love-cook mode (and hoping that the nosebleed thing is not going to be a permanent gag. It's funny for now but it's going to get old in about 3 chapters.)

Yeah, I really can't figure out what's going on. I agree with you, it seems totally out of left field and really hard to rationalize. It's almost like Oda's trying to appease some segment of his readers who were offended by/disappointed with Sanji's statement about not being able to kick women. But then in his response he says that the reaction was generally mixed, and even then it seems odd for a man who makes such bold statements about gender (hello, Ikanova) to backtrack like that. The whole thing is really weird.

Sounds like that commentary says more about Oda, than it does about Sanji. XP

Which SBS is the one which shows that (the jokes about porn and breast sizes)? I couldn't find it on the page :s Also, it seems to me that the images may have been drawn by someone else? There seems to be a tracing/thick marker line quality to most of them.

I agree. Somehow, though, that makes it worse :/

The jokes are kind of scattered throughout - I was clicking through a bunch to look up some stuff, mostly in vol. 48 - 55. It's just annoying, since a lot of other material is amusing and helpful enough that I can't really reject the SBS altogether...

And yeah, I think he's taking fan submissions for SBS title pages as well as the Usopp Gallery.
