I really thought the tools were cool too! Do you think those are little balls of colored threads, silk maybe? It makes me wonder what that little note says...

My guess is that they are silks, but their form confuses me. Why would balls all stay lined up as they appear to be in her two bentwood boxes? Are they for embroidery, or lacemaking: What is with all the pins? I don't think they are needles... A knife & a pair of scissors? Tools or allegorical addition?

Are those two loose white balls thread or buttons or pearls or...?

Why are some of the threads skeined and others in balls, why are some shown unwound (artist being clever and showing off their technique)?

And yes, what *does* the note say? I am guessing that it is probably some sort of commentary about the sitter.

BTW - I love her bubblebee hat!

Very cool. I only wish it was a lot larger, to see more details.

And any idea what they used the knife for, if this is their sewing kit?

Same question I had (about the knife)…

jillwheezul was the original poster of the image on the GermanRenCostume list….perhaps we can do some image searching if she can offer any further information on the artist or the subject.
