MTE. The link from my statement in the post actually leads to a series of posts regarding my research on the subject. It appears that there may be versions of lucet cording before the period (like, WELL before the period) and immediately after the period (17th c.). However, until someone tells me that an extant cord they found can be dated to the period itself, I can't buy the, "But the VIKINGS did it!" argument.
