I get asked this all the time and I'm not able to answer definitively as I'm not sure how my process differs from most others' but I've tried to answer

I really like your explanation. Of every technical step you make for an icon, I only know and do not even half of them myself. Now I'm really intrigued, the smart object part is something I know zero about, and I'm going now to experiment like crazy! Thank you love!!!

To be fair, I think the main advantage of the Smart Object in the way that I make icons is that I can adjust the filter endlessly. If I get to the end and it's just a smidge too sharp, I can go back and lower the filter's opacity or I can change the settings on the filter. It gives me complete control over sharpening.
