Lucius had sent Severus his request to come over for dinner Friday, and as it was Friday, he was certainly going to be home early to make sure everything was prepared. He was looking forward to Sunday morning, of course, but every day in its own time ( Read more... )

Narcissa sat in the sitting room sipping wine from a tall glass, waiting. She did it every day. Just sat and waited for Lucius to arrive. Lucius was always working late, and there was no telling where Draco was these days, so she just sat and waited until dinner was served, then ate in silent solitude and retired to bed in the same fashion.

Hearing the front door close and a small squeak from a House Elf, Narcissa's ears perked and she looked towards the doors that lead to the hall. "Lucius," she said and smiled warmly, seeing her husband enter the room.

Lucius' lips curled slowly as they always did when he first saw his wife. "Narcissa." He walked to the table and poured himself a glass of wine, setting his cane on the back of a chair. "Have you been waiting long, my dear?"

Narcissa stood and crossed over to Lucius, placing her hand over his. "Too long, darling."

Lucius in turn set down his wine to take her hand, holding it between his gloved hands with a slight tilt of his head. "Too long? I did apologize for being busy, dearest. The Dark Lord expects me to keep everything running smoothly, and I cannot give him any reason to doubt me again. You don't doubt that I am still your loving husband, do you?"

"I'd like to look over that roster as well, dear," Narcissa said, sipping her wine. "I'm sure there are a couple of. . . unruly new captives who need to be broken. It would be my pleasure."

"Yes, but one must take care of basic needs for them or they perish rather quickly. Better to let a lady that prefers to break them, have them," Severus said with a nod to Narcissa, but he dodged the look in Lucius' eyes. Not a sure sign of his ignorance, but nothing to damn him either.

Lucius' eyes narrowed thoughtfully, but he shrugged the expression off with a glance to his wife. "If you wish, my dear. Bear in mind that you cannot own any of them while you have your one slave, though. You may transfer temporary ownership of the girl to me again, if you like, in order to get another. I do have space for her."

He ate some more before setting his fork down and looking directly at Severus. "You will be able to stay for a short while after dinner, won't you? There are a few things I would like to discuss with you about the department's relations with Fenrir. I may need your expertise on the situation." Noting how it sounded, he turned to smile at Narcissa. "After dealing with work, my dear, I promise we will be alone as you requested."

"Thank you darling. I shall look at the list soon." Narcissa smiled at her husband's thoughtfulness in remembering she wanted some alone time with him, and placed her hand over his on the table. "Of course, love. I'll take a nice, hot bath. I haven't had a good soak in ages."
