GAME OF THRONES pilot, quick thoughts

Well, it's sure blue. The effect isn't as consistently bad as I'd feared, in part because the producers ramp it up at moments of tension. The closing part of the pre-credits sequence was so murky it was hard to make out. Most of the scenes in Winterfell weren't terribly obtrusive, though I would have liked the show's aesthetic much better ( Read more... )

Littlefinger is played by the man who became Mayor of Baltimore in The Wire. That's telling, for me.

Don't know if you've seen the movie barcode site, but it's a nice visualization of a movie's color scheme. For certain movies, you can even pinpoint events based on the shift in colors (assuming they use more than one color).

I haven't read the source material so I have no expectations. I just wish it wasn't produced by HBO. I'd rather not have that much nudity and sex in my fantasy movies. Actually, I'd rather not have any nudity and sex in my fantasy movies.

I don't mind the sex... I don't even really mind the nudity, except that it just seemed kinda "there" to me. Scantily clad would've worked just as well in all the scenes I can think of--except one (the blond/barbarian mating/wedding). There it was plotpoint, and made sense in the story and moved the story forward, and I can easily see the arguement that scantily clad would NOT have worked as well.

Otherwise, it just seemed there to be naked, and seemed to be rather a lot of it. Where's the plot in that?

They did much better with Boardwalk Empire, I thought... which also had nudity.

Well, since the sex is in the source material (though given my opinion of Martin's writing from the snatches I've read, it's certainly not the kind of sex and nudity the show seems interested in so far), I think HBO is actually a good choice of production company. What I do think is annoying is that in general, except for the haircutting scene and Drogo's butt, the show isn't interested in doing anything but female nudity/objectification. Which is unsurprising (ratings) but bothersome, in my view.
