hey, remember back in the NSFW SPARTACUS primer, when I said that my bet was on Crixus to become the fan-favorite character on the show?

I WIN. On the official SPARTACUS forum, fan 4thHorseman complains:

I think part of it is Crixus' loyalty to his brothers and the code. He hates Spartacus because Spartacus never showed any loyalty to either.

I find him an interesting character because he's so invested in what's a completely false world view. There's no honor in being a gladiator--yet Crixus thinks there is. That's what makes him a tragic figure.

Oh god. I hope the creators don't pull a Spike. So many showrunners - ones you would think would know better - don't get that fan favorite characters don't have to be the hero. That, in fact, what people like about them are all the traits that make them different from standard issue hero.

But hey man, the fans like him, so let's make him "cooler"! That won't manage to annoy both fans of the actual hero and fans of the dark horse character at aaaaaall.

(Case in point: Spike. Supercool as occasionally morally ambiguous, jerky, but sometimes useful bad guy. The NotAngel. So what do they do? Try to make him as much like Angel as possible and make characters like him, or imply they are bad people for not liking him. WHY?)
