Ohmygoodness, what a very nice, heart-wrenching little story. Sort of took my breath away, it did. The whole pie-baking thing with Catherine, and the fact that Bones recognized that Booth having Catherine would mean he'd have someone who "likes pie without having to be convinced to do so." Wow. Yikes. Startling insight for Bones, actually, but certainly not outside the realm of possibility at this point.

I was a little surprised that Booth went after Catherine, considering again what's gone on up to this point, but I can also understand Booth's desire to find someone who will, shall we say, "make pie with him," even though the mere thought of his love for Bones probably makes his knees weak (or makes it feel like he's been shot, as you so aptly wrote). In any case, it's not all black-and-white between Booth & Bones, never has been. And I really liked the first person Booth; it's a rarity.

I saw the episode tonight and, after replaying the end and crying, went on a search for fic. Yours is by far the best I have found so far. It has also made me cry. I still can't believe it happened.
