Al glanced to Rose out of habit before turning back to Victor. "People aren't exactly sure, but Hogwarts is... a bit over a thousand years old. That's what people reckon. It was founded by these four wizards, really powerful, who thought that there should be somewhere to learn about magic." Al grew more animated as he got into it. "And now there's four houses there, one named after each of the wizards who founded it. That's Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. And like the whole building is magical. It's supposed to be awesome!" Al looked up for a moment. "That's probably why electrical stuff doesn't work there. Magical resistance or... something."
"Yeah, it would be." Al nodded, pushing a raisin around the dish with his spoon, seemingly giving it his rapt attention. "I mean, all of London." He waved his hand expansively. "Would it be here, at least like it is, if there were no muggles? There'd be no planes, and cars and stuff, prob'ly. It'd be..." He shrugged. "Yeah, strange." A more worried expression flitted over his face. "And if someone like Voldemort turned up out of the people who are wizards now, think how many more could've done if everyone was wizards..."
"It's just such an odd concept," Rose agreed, "Because we have magic, and Muggles have science. So, yeah, like you said no cars, no planes... I mean, it's not such a big deal when we have magic. But it's still really amazing what Muggles can invent." She paused, "Oh, thanks," she added to the man who was obviously taking the dishes away. "Still," Rose said, "There's the wizarding world and then there's the Muggle world. It looks like it'll stay that way." She shrugged, "I don't know if we're better or worse off because of the difference between Muggles and witches and wizards, or if we're better or worse off under the International Statute of Secrecy, but it's the way things are." Again she shrugged, pushing her hair out of her face, "That's not saying that things can't or won't change, but for now, that's the way it is." Here Rose laughed, "It's amazing how the conversation can move so easily from holidays to something like this, isn't it?"
"Heh, sorry for gettomg all serious on you. Guess there'll be time for that in a couple of weeks, eh?" Al grinned wickedly, though the smile didn't quite make it as far as his eyes. "I guess I've been thinking about it a lot recently, is all. I met this girl over the holidays - you'd like her, she's cool - but she's a muggle and... y'know." Al gave a shrug that implied he didn't.
Sorry about the really late post. Life has been busy lately.dontcallmerosieOctober 12 2007, 09:06:40 UTC
Rose gave Al a sympathetic smile, "It's fine really. Just a bit of a depressing topic is all." She shrugged, unsure of what to say next, before Al continued talking. "Really?" Rose said, leaning forward slightly, cutting through the middle of Al's speech, "What's her name?" She bit her lip, "Sorry, bad habit. Go on." As Al added the part about the girl being a muggle, Rose suddenly understood what all the talk before had been about. She gave yet another sympathetic smile, "And so you can't tell her." Rose finished off.
No worries - these things happen ;-)sevoral_reasonsOctober 12 2007, 09:25:13 UTC
"Oh, her names Faye." Al said with a nod, and continued. "But, yeah, it's really difficult to talk to someone when you can't tell them... well... pretty much anything. And, y'know, I don't want to have to lie and stuff, but I do." Al shrugged again. "Anyway, like I said, sorry to go on like this. It's not really a big deal or antyhing, just one of those things."

"Al," Rose said, "It's fine, really." She started to stand up, lifting her arms above her head as she stretched. "Even, if you can't tell her about..." She gestured around her, "All of this, you can still be friends. It might not be easy, but she sounds like a friend worth having." Rose gave a little sigh, "Sorry if I'm not being much of a help, it's just I'm not really sure what you should do either."

"It's ok, I wasn't expecting anyone to be able to give me an answer or anything. But, thanks for hearing me out. And not taking the mick." Al grinned, mostly sincerely, and leapt to his feet. "We didn't come here to listen to me whining, though, did we? I've got to get some stuff for Athena, and I hear they've got baby salamanders in now, which should be cool. Or, well, hot I guess..." Al gave another grin, and left some money on the table. He waved to Florean as he headed for the street.
