Title: Somewhere Out There
Words: 688
Rating: PG
Characters/pairings: just Harry/Ginny
Summary: Though far apart, they are still closer than ever

Ginny sighed as she finished her Dark Arts revision; she remembered last year when the class was called Defence Against the Dark Arts, and two years ago when Harry taught the DA. She wished for the millionth time that he was here at Hogwarts with her.

She had just opened her Charms book when Demelza approached her to ask about the next Quidditch practice.

"Tomorrow night," Ginny answered as she chewed on her lip. "Not like it matters, anyway." The two girls both gave cheerless laughs. Gryffindor had lost their first match to Hufflepuff, and the team knew they would lose to Slytherin in two weeks.

Demelza agreed. "Yeah. The only fair match this year will be the one between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw." It was widely accepted that this year Slytherin would win all of their matches and Gryffindor would lose all of theirs. She gathered up her books. "See you tomorrow, Ginny."

Three hours later, Ginny was still sitting at the table. A glance at her watch told her it was close to midnight, and a quick look around the room confirmed that she was the only one still in the common room. She closed her homework planner - Harry's homework planner that Hermione had given to him during his fifth year, and traced her nail over the Golden Snitch fluttering across the cover. As if her touch had awakened it, the Snitch moved quickly and disappeared from the cover. Ginny opened the planner and watched as it faded into the pages, seemingly absorbed by the paper. Ginny blinked back tears at her failure to hold onto it. It wasn't the first time it had disappeared from the planner and she doubted it would be the last.

Ginny slowly climbed the stairs to the girls' dormitory, pausing to look out the window at the stars glittering in the black sky. Not for the first time, she closed her eyes and hoped that Harry was somewhere safe out under those same stars.

“Merlin, let him be safe,” she whispered.

Harry sat in the entryway of the tent. Soft snores from inside let him know that Hermione was asleep. He dug the Marauder's Map out from his bag. He whispered, "Lumos," and the light from Hermione's wand helped him find Ginny's dot.

She wasn't moving much tonight; in fact, she hadn't left the table in the Common Room all night. Twice, others came to sit with her for a while - Demelza and Colin.

Harry smiled when he thought about what Demelza's visit probably meant - when Harry hadn't returned to Hogwarts, Ginny was probably made Quidditch Captain. He hoped that she was leading his team - her team - to victories.

Colin probably had his camera with him. He remembered the photograph the younger boy had given him last year - the photo had been taken when he had first kissed Ginny in front of all of Gryffindor. Harry kept it with him always, in the Moleskin pouch Hagrid had given him.

Harry remembered studying with Ginny last year. They seldom stayed in the Common Room - Ro her brother would sulk and alternately tell them not to sit so close together, not to kiss, not to whisper, not to….

They couldn't use the library - Madame Pince glared at them, and shushed them before suggesting they go elsewhere if they were going to giggle.

No matter where they were, Hermione would cluck her tongue at them, lecturing Ginny about her OWLs, before adding a snide comment about how Harry really should exert more of an effort in Potions as Professor Slughorn thought he was a genius.

Harry watched as she moved up the stairs. She stopped for a moment and he wondered what she was doing. There were times when he wanted nothing more than to forget everything - the Horcruxes, the Hallows, and especially Voldemort - and just be with Ginny.

His heart ached as he remembered that kiss she had given him for his seventeenth birthday. He regretted breaking up with her and leaving without saying good-bye. He just hoped that his actions would keep her safe, until he could see her again.
