Written for the Hpgw_drabble March 2010 Challenge based on the amazing video-prompt ‘Miles from where you are’. Some lyrics from the Snow Patrol song used in the video are in there somewhere.
You sit down on the cold ground and take the locket from his lifeless hands. You can't believe this is happening and despair surrounds you and you are cold, too.
You feel strong arms around you and you cling to their warmth. Your senses are invaded by her presence and though you feel miles from where you are, she is there too.
Later, you are curled up against her on the cushions in the common room as sleep will not come. Your fingers trace the freckles on her exposed skin and you memorize them like a map. You know you will have to leave her behind. You know she cannot walk your path. You get an inkling of that crushing feeling of despair again but you push it away. Not tonight. You know you will have to tell her soon but not tonight.
Tonight, your fingers travel familiar places and you feel warm again in her arms.
You watch her from your spot just outside the party tent. She looks positively gorgeous in her bridesmaid dress and her hair all done up. Different from the Ginny you know, but gorgeous. You feel a smile breaking through your melancholy at the liveliness in the way she's talking animatedly to Hermione, Ron and Luna. Probably cursing her new sister-in-law for all the wedding madness by the looks of it. You don't blame her. It's been a strange day for all of you but much to your own surprise, you've enjoyed it.
She catches your eye and halts in the middle of her sentence. She knows it is time, too.
You turn and walk away from the festivities into the warm summer night. By the small pond, she catches up with you. Her hair is tousled and her breathing shallow from running. You feel your own breath hitch at the startled look in her eyes and a sharp pang of something runs through you. Seconds pass and the words you had rehearsed so painstakingly are not coming. Your heart is pounding in your chest and you want to run but you don't because she is looking at you with that look, half pleading, half defying and it's so her that you suddenly know you can do this.
'Ginny.'
She takes a small step towards you and briefly closes her eyes. When she opens them again, there is so much sadness there. She knows what is coming.
'I'm leaving. I'm not coming back.'
You take her hand and your fingers intertwine familiarly with hers. They are strong.
'It's true. I am the Chosen One. I've fot the finish whatever Dumbledore started. I
don't know where that'll lead me. I'll let you know where I am, if I can.'
She bites her bottom lip and you know she is fighting back a response and you're so grateful for it. You've never really given into thinking about a real future but right now... Merlin, you want to.
You hear footsteps coming closer. Ron and Hermione. They're ready.
You want more time. You move closer to hold her and she moulds her body against yours. You take in everything about her and you let it fill your senses, burning it into your soul. You feel her lips brush against your chest as she whispers.
'When you're done being the Chosen One, I'll be waiting.'
You know you are grinning from ear to ear like a moron but you don't care. She has that stubborn look and you just want to kiss her. So you do.
The kiss is short and wet and she breaks it far too soon as she cups your cheek and stares you down with moist eyes and an angry determination that leaves you breathless. Merlin, you think you might love this woman.
'That was not a goodbye kiss. Do you hear me, Harry? This is not goodbye.'
And then she is walking away from you. You are hurting and none of it is fair but you know what you have to do. You take one final look at her then you turn around to face your friends.
'You ready?'
You're not used to Ron sounding so solemn but then again he's not used to carrying this kind of burden and you feel for him.
'Yes.'
You think that one word sounds much more certain than you feel, but it seems enough to convince Ron who is already walking back.
You feel Hermione's hand on your shoulder.
'He's ok with it, you know. You and Ginny.'
You give her a small smile. The Burrow looms into view through the trees and you feel you're as ready as you'll ever be.
You climb through the portrait hole and then you freeze. She is sitting there, waiting.
You're at a loss for words and all you can do is stare, so you do.
'You're hurt.'
She sounds distressed and you hear her pain as acutely as you feel your own.
'I'm ok.'
You say it on impulse but once the words are out, you know they are true.
You want to tell her more but you've travelled so far. Distant, dark places. But no more now.
'It's over. It's just a memory.'
She gets up and looks every bit as shaken as you feel.
'Good. I have another memory for you then.'
You hold your breath.
She is running towards you with that blazing look from that day, miles from where you are now, and then you are kissing and you feel everything, everything. You pick up from the last place you left off and you are the Chosen One no more.
