It’s hardest when he sees her halfway through the year, at Christmas, after months of being separated.

It was easy to forget just how red her hair is or how brightly her freckles stand out from her pale skin while he’s neck deep in auror training and exhausted every night, but once he finally has a chance to really breathe, to really look, he’s overwhelmed.

I missed you, she says, hugging him once he gets back, his body aching from the months of loneliness. All it takes is one look from her and he starts to thaw, a stubborn heat ignited by her smile.
