...But it isn't the first Harry Potter store in the US- what about Whimsic Alley, one of my favorite places, in Los Angeles? http://www.whimsicalley.com Nice Rupert pix, though!
They're not officially licensed, so even though they sell some official merchandise, they can't call themselves a Harry Potter store. This is why they call themselves a "wizard store" and refer to the items they produce themselves by generic names rather than by character or house name.
Ah, Ok, I see. Good point. I never think about these sticky legality-type considerations! Still a great store, though. I wish there was an FAO Schwartz nearer to me, the closest one we had went belly-up years ago. Toys were insanely overpriced, when people could go to the Kay-Bee store nearby. Still, they had neat stuff Kay-bee or Toys-R-Us would never carry, like vintage Steiff animals, and other antiques. Ah well. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
I've never been anywhere near an FAO Schwartz. Having lived pretty much smack dab in the mid-section of the country most of my life, there haven't been any around. But I've wanted to go desperately since hearing about all the wonderful things they have. Though paying an arm, a leg and my first born for a toy doesn't sound too appealing.
I guess if you are a toy collector or have more money than sense- it's the perfect place. I can think of only ever buying two items there- a pets.com spokesdog (remember him?) hand puppet and a talking Kipper plush doll for my daughter when she was a baby- and I only bought them there because they were the only ones who carried them. I collect many things, thank goodness expensive toys are not among them!
