Design space for Monday

Mar 17, 2008 01:12

Today, I'd like to hear your design advice and tips for a space that is very near and dear to me: a bedroom.

How do you use your space? How do you make it yours? Or, how do you make a guest bedroom or a child's bedroom comfortable?

Also, don't forget to look for the winner for Week 2's competition on Wednesday!

I like to keep bedroom walls a soothing color such as a light blue or light green. Bedrooms, after all, are meant to be places to rest and feel comfortable, so bright, bold colors are out of the question for me.

I also always have a place to store books, which are an important part of my life. On my bed alone, I currently have a novel, a memoir, and a graphic novel. I've actually always had a bookshelf in my room, though if I had the space, I'd create my own library. If, one of this week's prompts is "describe your ideal room," I'll tell you about it. :)

My ideal room would be a library that is perfect for both social gatherings and time spent alone with a good book. In one corner, there would be an area for a group of people to sit together and read aloud (perfect for children's story time or a family reading of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"), and one of the windows would have a window seat so that I could read there. Think Jane Eyre as a child hiding behind the curtains of a window seat to read her book.

The bookcases won't be wall to wall, floor to ceiling. They'll be a few different heights so that they won't feel intimidating or overwhelming. Plus, I'd be able to hang art on the walls. The bookcases would need glass doors on them to keep the dust off. And if my library is big enough, I would also like to have double doors for the entrance so that any future children and/or nieces and nephews could use the area for a stage (like in Mansfield Park except those characters weren't kids). And as they grow older, I'd have a table for them to use for study groups (because, you ( ... )

We live in a one bedroom apartment, three of us.

Our bedroom has the bed, one of those misquito nets around it, in darn brown, Our bed is stained, and distressed almost black. The coverlet is patchwork, dark reds, purples, and bronzes.

Next to our bed is Our daughters Crib, with the side taken off. I made her a blanket that matches ours, and There are little throw pillows that go on it during the day. On our poosite wall is a bookshelf. We don't have much else beacuse the space is so small. One day, though we will have more room. :)

Ugh. I never get to really make my room mine. But I have so many ideas. At my last apartment, we managed to get the old country kitchen, the french bathroom, and the movie poster living room together, but never made it to the kids or our room. My daughter's room was going to be a garden.

The ceiling and the tops of the walls painted blue with clouds. The bottoms painted like grass. We were going to use real picket fencing around the bottom with a birdhouse coat hanger on the wall. Decorated with flowers and butterflies and a bed canopy that matched, it was going to be just what she wanted.

The younger kids' room was going to be circus themed. They were always acting like clowns and animals, so it would have been perfect. With a bed canopy that looked like a circus tent and bent sheet metal to look like fun house mirrors, it would have had plenty of storage along with the colors and fun they needed.

I watch way too many decorating shows. he he

Oh my gosh...my head is swimming. I love to think of ideas for room decor. And I'm a penny pincher too, so you know it would be affordable. If you need any ideas, let me know. I am so gonna call Trading Spaces..he he

If we decide to buy the house we're renting right now we may just call on you... ;) Seriously! Our room has nothing but maps on the wall right now.

Of course, since it's being used by a pair of geographers, maps are appropriate and all... hmm...

Matching is incredibly important to me, so everything in my bedroom is either burgundy, black, or beige.

I have huge walls, and I use that to my advantage by completely covering them with mementos of concerts and such that I've been to; I have posters, tickets, CDs, etc all over my walls. My walls are my pride and joy... I'm going to be sad to leave them next year when I go to college :/

When I lived at home, my room was very similar to yours. I had a door that was so covered with stickers and artwork that you couldn't see it, and the room just got more "me" inside. Leaving it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do :(

I never actually had a decorated room until last summer because there wasn't enough time, but I absolutely love it now. It's a dusty pink color with cream colored accents. I just wanted something simple because it isn't a very large room. I made a collage of pictures of things like an old cover of seventeen magazine from 1963, a still from breakfast at tiffany's, an antique ballarina picture, ceramic wall hangings, and assorted posters of Paris.

My entire room is decorated in Paris and antiques, from my night stand made of old suitcases to my chairs and porcelain dolls. My favorite part of my room, though, is my bed. Instead of having to buy new comforters every time I want to redecorate my room, I splurged on a white, cotton Calvin Klein almost down comforter (which I wouldn't have got, had I not woken up at 3am the day after Thanksgiving to go to Macy's)and I just swap out throw pillows and blanks to change the styles.

That sounds gorgeous! I love Paris décor :) And how neat that you took advantage of a Thanksgiving sale for that!
