So what to make of all Dumbledore's protestations while drinking the potion? Just hallucinations from the magic? Was he recalling bits of his own past, or from Tom Riddle's?
There is a theory out there (nyxfixx turned me on to it, but she'd read it somewhere, I believe) that the potion was the Horcrux, and DD knew this. Some even think that DD planted the locket - which he knew was a dud - for Harry's benefit. Hmm, perhaps she'll pay a visit over here to explain a bit more.
Do you reckon that DD had been to the cave before? If I were Harry, watching DD work his magic - sensing the spellwork, speaking in exotic tongues - I'd feel pretty doomed for my prospects in the future! This chapter further cements my opinion that magic will not get Harry very far in DH. He just doesn't have anywhere near the magical chops he needs to go that route.
I did wonder if he were reliving some of Tom's memories, too.
I have the same suspicion that you do, that a lot of advanced magic can't be the answer--Harry not having mastered it. I'm not sure what to say on this one.
The potion-as-Horcrux theory is interesting, but it doesn't fit in well with Dumbledore's suspicion that the Horcruxes were symbolic in and of themselves.
