Hi, my name is Rachael. I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I'm a high school senior who has been knitting for a few years, and figured out kniting by playing around with knitting needles and yarn. The first thing I ever knitted was a gryffindor PoA scarf, which took forever because I was trying to figure everything out. After that, I made a ( Read more... )

Those look great! Do you recall the brand of yarn and the colors you used for the Gryffindor scarf? I have a friend who wants one and yours looks really nice.

thanks. I used Lions brand wool-ease, which is an acrylic. I chose it because I was a 15 year old with no form of income: it was cheep, like.. 2 or 3 dollars a ball. also, its really easy to take care of. its machine washable, which is especially good with gifts, because if the recipient doesn't know how to take care of it properly they won't end up with a felted scarf. I want to say that I used cranberry and buttercup, but i don't remember, and i was stupid because i didn't save the labels. I always thought the cranberry was too red looking and not maroon enough, but oh well. Just compare the colors, and change them out if you don't think they work as well together.

Very nice work. I'm curious, though, why are you working the ribbing Ravenclaw scarf in the round? Or does it just look that way from the pictures?

no, you're right.. there's ribbing.. I like working in the round for these scarves better, and I thought i read somewhere that the scarves were ribbed. Not sure though. Anyways, yeah. I like the texture that the scarf has with the ribbing, and with feels a lot thicker, which is good out here in the winter. Also, i just wanted to try something new, and doing it on my mom's birthday present seemed a good time to try it. but yeah, i thought about that right after i started it and was ready to hit myself over the head in stupidity.

Well, from looking at hi res pics of the scarves, I can tell you that they are worked in k1p1 ribbing (probably a sport weight or slightly lighter), and are really wide. Working it in the round isn't a big deal if you don't mind that it's so much thicker, but it will halve the width of the scarf.

yeah. I noticed that it was thinner than my gryffindor scarf, but i figured that it would happen. whats nice is that it ended up at the same width as my house unity scarf, which i actually liked better for grab in the morning before school scarf because it wasn't so wide, and it was easier to handle. worst comes to worst, my mom doesn't like the thickness, and i make her one that isn't ribbed and keep this one for myself. I wouldn't mind that. ^.^

Looks great so far. That penguin is happiness in a stitch marker right there.

You should name your little knitting buddy if you haven't already.

That's awesome.
What about some old-style name, like one that sounds like it's from some other country.
Federick the penguin perhaps?
Or maybe Rose-Marie.

I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the link.
