This is wonderful! It's a great idea for a 'missing canon moment,' but it's also so much more than that. I love the dynamic between Aberforth and Neville, how well they understand each other. ♥

What a wonderful insight into both Neville and Alberforth. I particularly loved the narrative voice, grumpy and lonely and bitter and hopeful. His comments about Albus rang really true.

I also loved that you have Slughorn automatically planning to go back and fight, but he has to get the kids safe first. The Slytherin in me is ver pleased.

Great depictions. I loved the point about Neville's experiences with Frank and Alice making it natural for him to interact with Ariana, that's an excellent parallel.

I loved Aberforth's voice and your characterizations of Aberforth, Neville, and Ariana. Aberforth's thinking about fighting becasue HArry gave Dobby a good burial was an excellent detail. So was Slughorn's cameo. All-around brilliant story!

Missing scenes are among my favorite types of fic, and this is excellent.

"They were going to kill me." His voice is calm, not shocked or scared, and for a moment Aberforth is gutted, because this is what the wizarding world has done to another generation of kids. They've let this happen, all of them, and now the younger generation will bear the brunt...There's a reason he never had kids, and it's nothing to do with those rumours about his sexual proclivities. Why bring children into a world like this one, which will gobble them up and spit out their bones for the jackals to fight over?Aberforth's resentment of what Albus has done to others is right on point, as is his distancing himself from the world that's done such awful things. I love how it's the kids -- their hope, their optimism, their willingness to fight -- that eventually make him realize that he can't sit this one out, especially Neville: "the image of his mother but built on his father's frame; he'll be a fine figure of a wizard some day, if they let him live long ( ... )
