This was a really interesting look at DD's thought process during these major events that eclipsed certain moments in his life. This is the sort of DD character study that I search for in fics but are hard to find! I like how you reconciled the sort of calculated, manipulative side we were presented with in DH with him becoming guarded toward adults, but we see how much he cares even despite his doubts about the children at school. And I really enjoy Gellert's letters and Albus's back and forth on them as a way to set up the context of the story and how the consequences of their relationship dictates Albus's relationships with others and his actions towards them even later in life. Thank you so much, mystery author!

This fic hurts. In the best way possible. Dumbledore's voice -- his regrets, his arrogance, his sheer, unadulterated belief in his own (flawed) judgement -- comes through so well, as does the reflected image of Grindelwald. Wonderful job.

Oh wow. This is magnificent. You've written one of the best depictions of Dumbledore I've come across. There were so many lines that just made me catch my breath. The cyclical nature of events, the patterns Albus observes around him, his hubris, indecision, and hard-won wisdom--it's all just so right for his voice. You've done some impressive writing here!

I have always struggled to understand Dumbledore and have consistently hunted for fics that dive into his psyche. You did a great job here. It was unique in that you did not demonize him or make him utterly remorseful. His final affirmation of his own life was extremely rewarding. This was a real treat and, I should tell you, I'll never think of Dumbledore in quite the same way.

Great fic, especially Dumbledore's letter in the end - for me, Dumbledore's voice & words rang very true. I was struck particularly by his reasoning on why he is drawn to working with young people... I guess it's a full-circle journey for him.

The idea of a letter correspondence between Dumbledore and Grindelwadt is intriguing, and I like how you've laid it out here: Grindelwald showing "hurt bewilderment" and Dumbledore avoiding reading/replying them, and finally that one last letter that probably had Grindelwald thinking long and hard those 17 years... it all fits so well with the revelations in DH about those two characters. Nicely done!
