Title: Plays Well with Others Author: kyfairie Recipient: builtofsorrow Rating: PG Characters: Regulus Black, Severus Snape Author's Notes: Thank you so much to the wonderful moderators for putting together this fest!!
I have a difficult time defining why I love certain fics; there's just something about them that clicks with me, that makes me suspend disbelief so fully and entirely that I find the line between them and canon disappearing (in spite of the differences in writing styles).
Your characterisations are simply spot-on (in terms of the way I view these characters in my head, at any rate): Snape's unconventional, intimidating teaching style, his tendency to be rather skulkingly observant, and his social awkwardness; Reg's desperate attempts to be unlike Sirius, his nearly blind following of the family's footsteps, his getting into dire situations because he's not as aware as he should be, his unawareness of his own brilliance and talent and strengths. And both of them with their need to prove themselves, and their pride and arrogance -- clashing, yet somehow complementary

This was brilliant. Severus' characterisation was so perfectly canon-like, and with what we've seen from Regulus this could really have happened in canon. It's just what Severus would do to get his point across, and that's exactly why the Gryffindors hate him.
Aside from the character dynamics, you made the act of brewing potions a plot in its own right. I loved every little motion and step they had to follow through. Loved all the parallels that Severus drew between the art of potion making and the art of "playing well" with others. The final reasons for him to be friends with Regulus were so believably, so Slytherin, and at the same time, honest like spoken by a true friend.
See, that's how much I loved your story: I get all verbose. *g*

I promise to be more coherent later, once I've reread it about five times, but I just had to say that I love this. Thank you.
