So, what do you think about articles in the mainstream press like this one from Lumos? Should people just be canny enough to keep their mouths shut or is fannish expression nothing to be ashamed of?

And now some recs... )

I just read the article through the link xochiquetzl posted in her journal. Some of the stuff those fans were talking about made me a little hinky, like the Snape/Hermione rape trope and the room full of people writing bestiality, but as a matter of general principle, I think fandom is nothing to be ashamed of. FWIW, I'm not actively involved in any fandom. I just have lots of friends who are. :-)

I think the article says a lot more about the author than about the fans. The author comes off as yet another snooty elitist looking down her nose at popular culture and anyone who finds enjoyment in it, at least until the last paragraph. No, Rowling is not Nabokov. But frankly, I'd rather read Rowling.

I look at fandom ... and especially slash fandom ... in the same way a gay friend once described his views on his sexuality: I'm not ashamed of who I am and I won't hide in a closet, but I'm not going to go out, join a parade and make an ass of myself just to provide the biggots more fodder for their vitriol, either.
