Am I the only one?

Feb 12, 2006 13:14

You know, I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm the only person who has particular views on certain HP-related subjects, so I thought I'd throw this out as a question here (especially as I feel I've been spamming the community with recs ( Read more... )

Opinion 3 - Draco became more interesting in HBP. I'm thinking particularly of the weeping in the bathroom and his pretense that he was going to carry out his mission when it was painfully obvious he wouldn't. "I fucked up and now they may hurt my mother" Draco is more interesting to me, but still hardly one of my favorite characters.

At last, Draco has achieved two-dimensionality. More may be beyond him, though, and I wonder how much of the Dracolove is due to the character (such as he is) or pretty (if your tastes go that way) blond boys?

Maybe that's the problem - Illya Kuryakin aside, blonds don't do it for me. And Lucius just makes me go 'oh, look at the silly hair!', not 'OMG he is so hawt!!11!!!' ;)

he's snooty and pushing the school board around because he's spoiled and he can.

I tend to agree. I have more sympathy for Draco's being a spoiled brat than Lucius's similar behavior. Not that I have much tolerance for spoiled brats...

I can't explain a lot of it to you, Graculus, because I whole-heartedly agree with all three of your points.

I get the impression that fanon Draco is a poor abused woobie with a sad homelife

*nods* Yes, that's often how he is. Or, sometimes he's just a spoiled rich brat with bad parents. I also think a lot of it is the movieverse, with the pretty blond Draco there. They were attracted by that visual image, much as Snape fans were reeled in by Rickman's voice.

While I'll freely admit to being dragged into HP fandom by becoming utterly smitten with Movie!Snape (and against my better judgement, because I'm not a major Rickman fan per se), it was the quality of Snape-centric fic that kept me here.

While some people might see Movie!Draco as pretty, I'm afraid that the words that most immediately leap to mind are 'vapid' and 'cipher'. ;)

It's like we're twins.

I've never cared much for Sirius, either, for many of the same reasons you mentioned. And I've never understood the need some writers have to bring him back from the dead.

I've never cared for Marauder stories either. I think I've read one that I can stand.

Disagreeing with you on number 3, though. Malfoy done right can be hot.

Here's my deep dark Harry Potter confession. I don't like Harry all that much. He's broody, moody, and self-absorbed. I think he has potential, and I cut him some slack because I'd be a bit tetchy too if I had been raised in a closet by people who hated me and some noseless demon-person kept trying to kill me, but I wish he would just lighten up once in a while.

We must be triplets then, because I discovered a while back that xochiquetzl is my twin. ;)

I have to say, I've read some fic in which Sirius is an interesting character, even ones where he's been brought back from the dead (and maybe more so those, because he doesn't come back as WonderSirius...)

I don't like Harry all that much. He's broody, moody, and self-absorbed.

Well, he is a teenager. ;)

I know, I know. But so are the other characters, and they don't seem to be so damn whiney all the time. Then again, I might be whiney, too, if the fate of the Wizarding World rested on my shoulders.

I don't really like *any* of the HP characters, even though I like the HP books. For just about every character in the books, I've read someone's explanation of why they don't like them, how they're not a nice person, not even a good person, and they're all true! Dumbledore is manipulative, Snape is abusive, Sirius is irresponsible and amoral, Hermione is an insufferable know-it-all, Harry is self-absorbed and whiny, the twins are budding sociopaths, Ron is a future Wormtail, etc., etc. There's not a one of them I'd trust as a coworker, let alone want as a friend ( ... )

I guess with the Marauder stuff, I'm always left wondering how much of who the characters are as adults is down to their teenage experiences, so a Snape who hasn't been terrorised by werewolf!Lupin or bullied by the Marauders isn't quite the Snape I know and am fascinated by. As a result, I find those Snape/Lupin stories that deal with the past history much more interesting.

And as for Draco et al, like you I can be convinced of his being a moderately interesting supporting character if someone takes the trouble to actually flesh out what JKR and the movies have given us - hell, a good writer can convince me of almost anything! - but that's all he is to me, part of the supporting cast.
