HP_essays: essayathon?

Apr 30, 2005 14:45

As you may or may not remember, a little over a year ago, the founder of this community, eilanhp held the first Harry Potter Essay-a-thon. siriaeve, my wonderful co-maintainer, recently suggested we should do another one, and we would like to have some feedback as to whether or not people would like to see this repeated and what form such a challenge should be ( Read more... )

I think it would be best if you put up a list of requests and people picked them on a first-come-first-serve basis. That way people are only writing essays that they would be happy to write (I know that last year you could choose two essays not to write - but that's only two!). Basically allowing people to be pickier. That way you'd get better quality essays, hopefully.

I'm sure other people would have a better idea though ;)

Yay for essay-a-thons! I wasn't able to participate in the last one, so I'm excited this time around, and it will give me a perfect excuse to get back to some of my 'one day I'll finish that' pieces!

I would love another essay-a-thon, but I think we should wait after HPB is out since a lot of stuff will change, things will be answered, new questions will arise and some things might turn out completely different than anybody thought.

Oh, and I second jupiter_lament's suggestion about picking your essays, that way no one has to write about something they might not want to write about.

I think you just put into words exactly why I want an essay-a-thon that ends before HBP comes out. Right now the comm is kinda stagnant, I can't think of much I'd like to put to words before HBP. An essay-a-thon would give that spark of new idea and creativity. After HBP comes out there will be new info and new theories out the nose, and I'll be too busy writing on my own theories and opinions to write on someone else's. I definately won't need an essay-a-thon to help me come up with a good topic, I'll have ten or twenty myself.

I wrote in the poll that I think the essay-a-thon should be after HBP comes out, but you've convinced me otherwise. I'd rather have the essay-a-thon now. (If anyone's calculating the votes, please switch mine. Thanks!)

Like jupiter_lament, I think we should allow individuals to choose their own topics to write essays on from the list of ideas generated. Essay requests from people who are writing essays should be starred, and essay-writers should give those first priority, but I think even non-essay writers should be allowed to suggest topics. Personally, for example, I would have no ideas to offer, because if I have any ideas for an essay, I'd just write it myself. :) What I'm looking for is further inspiration to write. So I'd probably be willing to take on an essay (or two or three) to write - but I wouldn't be offering up any ideas of my own.

I agree with jupiter_lament becaus ethat's how I would have done the second essay-a-thon if I were still the maintainer :) You could set up a topic where people suggest topics they'd like to see and then another where people claim an essay-idea.

And I will see if I can participate. I feel like I have to :)
