I really enjoyed this. I am actually kind of glad the relationship with Lucius was well defined but not graphic as I hoped this would focus more on motivations/emotions. I think Severus is very believable here. His guilt over betraying Lily, his, technically, unrequited love for Lucius and how he was basically used in a lot of way - all made him end up feeling jaded. I also kinda like the decision to leave Lucius wasn’t really emotional. It wasn’t easy, yes, but it was like he was just too drained to feel the agony of it, he just wanted something to be RIGHT for once.

I very much like the theme of "being good enough" that runs throughout this. It says so much about the insecurity underlying Severus' actions, even when he may not want to acknowledge it. And that part of his motivation to spy for Dumbledore stems from finding that sense of approval (whether it's as much a manipulation as Lucius' actions or not). Lovely writing.
