Unfortunately, it may have gone down totally differently - Harry survived AK because his mom died for him, but Neville's parents were already incapacitated by the time Voldy went a-hunting for the prophecy baby. Although, his grandma it a tough old broad who might have done the same as Lily, so there's still a chance he would have had the family love protection

Really? I totally forgot that. I was thinking it was just as part of being captured as members of the OotP during wartime and they happened to get the craziest torturer out there.
Hm, in that case his grandmother probably would have been just as hard on him despite his "defeating" Voldemort, the whole "Some BWL you turned out to be" kind of thing. He might have arrived at Hogwarts even more beat-down than he already was.
Yeah, they were tortured by Rabastan, Rodolphus, Barty, and Bella to get information regarding the Dark Lord's supposed demise. When all they could tell them is "He's dead," they were tortured into madness.
honestly, BEST character development in the entire series!
i like how jo shows what he could have been at the beginning of the series, and we come to see that he was much more than we could have imagined he'd be.
Neville is just fine, fresh, fierce, flawless, Chuck Norris's boggart, pees Felix Felicis etc.
but in all seriousness -and it's probably because i'm always a sucker for the theme of fate in fiction- the Neville/Harry thing, as little as it is analyzed in the books (and there was no need for more really) is one of the most epic revelations in the entire series imo.
So I've been thinking about this question a lot in the past few hours and I think it comes down to a few key elements. (Please don't mistake this diminishing the things that Harry has done or his characters. I don't think it will come across that way, or just in case.)
All of these ideas are things that I think would need to be brought up during SS/PS.
The friends that Neville has around him.I think it's safe to assume that if Neville had become "The Boy Who Lived" that he would have been surrounded in some of the same awe as Harry. I don't think it would have been quiet the same extent (mostly because I don't believe that Augusta Longbottom would have ever let someone else raise her grandson, Dumbledore's orders or not). I'm sure that people would have seen him around and he might have been more a reluctant mini-celebrity. Not really hounded, but stared at from a young age. I think that would take away from the ~mystery~ and ~awe~ that Harry had a bit, not completely, but just enough to make it easier for him not to feel like such

Hm, would Snape even be potions master if he hadn't inadvertently set Voldemort on Lily? The whole reason he repents and goes to Dumbledore is because he's trying to protect her, but if V had gone after the Longbottoms instead he would have had no reason to.
Which also means the Order would have been without their most valuable spy, which would have done further damage.
Oooohhhhhhhh. Lily and James becoming Frank and Alice....holy shit, what a depressing, depressing image. Can you imagine Harry's relationship with the Dursleys?!?!? OOOOOOOH MY GOD. What is this total mindblowing mindblow. the possibilities.
And if Lily and James had lived, would Snape's relationship actually change? And would Harry have been friends with Ron?
