Just think. If James hadn't locked Peter out of the dorm this time, then Peter wouldn't have grown bitter towards James. He wouldn't have accepted Voldemort's offer and become a Death Eater, and he definitely wouldn't have betrayed James and Lily, leaving poor Harry an orphan.

In other words, the entire HP series is as a result of this tiny typo!
