Summary: Harry had a feeling in his soul which said everything had been leading up to this moment.
Harry was sat at the back of the wedding marquee talking to Susan Bones.
The two of them had only started dating a few months ago and neither of them had looked back.
Harry never considered another relationship after what had happened to him because of Ginny’s betrayal. He had loved her with beat of his heart, and he did not think he could take the pain of going through something like that again. He tried to fight his growing feelings at first, but when Susan had told him that Ernie MacMillan had asked her out on a date, Harry realised that he didn't want to lose a chance to be with her.
Once he stopped resisting and told Susan how he felt, everything seemed to fit into place. It felt so easy and natural to be around her and he had not felt that way in a very long time.
They met again at Hannah and Neville's engagement party at the Leaky Cauldron, and hit it off.
Harry sat at the bar at the Leaky nursing a shot of Firewhisky. He knew that he should be celebrating with his friends, but after the crap day he'd had couldn't help it.
He didn't understand why Ginny would go and do something like that. They had split up nine months ago and it was now that she had decided to go and sell secrets about their relationship. It was as if she hadn't already hurt and humiliated him enough by cheating on him, she had to tell the world about their sex life as well.
"Are you going to stare at that all night, or are you going to drink it?" a voice said from beside him.
He hadn't even noticed anybody sit down next to him, but wasn't surprised when he saw Susan Bones sitting there.
It was Hannah and Neville's engagement party, and Susan was Hannah's best friend from Hogwarts so she of course had been invited by the happy couple.
"I don't know whether it would be wise to drink it or not," Harry replied.
"I think you should. I am sure that it will help you forget the rough day you've had," she said casually.
"You mean because of what Ginny did?" he asked.
"Well…I'm sure that's part of it. I heard that you caught the rogue Death Eaters who were responsible for those attacks on the Muggles last week. It must be hard to see that kind of thing again," Susan replied trying to stay casual.
It seemed as if she was trying not to make a big deal about what Ginny had done and he found himself grateful for it.
"How about I get a Firewhisky to match, and then we can drink them together?" Susan asked.
"That sounds good."
Harry smiled a little as he toasted the happy couple and downed the fiery liquid.
"Do you want another one?" Harry asked.
"Sure, what shall we toast to this time?" Susan asked.
"To life and all the shit that comes with it," he replied.
Susan rolled her eyes slightly, but her smile showed that she was only joking.
The two of them had another two shots and a comfortable silence enveloped them
"Most people don't believe her, you know? They think that she is just selling these stories for attention. She wants the world to love her, but all she will be remembered for is cheating on you," Susan informed him after awhile.
"I hope so. Not that much of what Ginny said was true, but I wish she hadn't have sold it anyway," Harry said sighing.
They talked long after the party had stopped and only parted ways when they realised that it was gone four o'clock in the morning. It had been refreshing for the both of them to talk about everything and anything and not having to hold back in fear of offending the other person.
"Do you remember the Yule Ball?" Susan turned and asked him, bringing him out of the memory.
"Yes, that was a bit of a disaster for me," Harry confessed.
Susan arched her eyebrow in response.
"I had a crush on someone and they went with someone else, I ended up in the middle of a fight between Ron and Hermione, and I made my date miserable because I wouldn't dance," Harry explained.
"That wasn't very nice of you, Harry. I was about to tell you that Hannah liked Neville since before then, and she was going to ask him to go with her, but she was just too shy to ask. She was scared that he would say no," Susan told him.
"I am sure that he would have said yes if he hadn't already had a partner. Neville was, and still is a gentleman," Harry complimented his friend.
Although Harry and Neville had shared a dorm for six years, they weren't particularly close until after the Battle of Hogwarts. The two of them, plus Ron, had joined the Auror squad for a while to help capture the Death Eaters who had escaped from the battle, or those who were not there.
They kept in close contact after Neville had left to pursue his dream of becoming a Herbology master, and had tried to catch up as much as possible.
"They look so happy." Susan stated.
"They do. Do you think people will say that about us?" Harry asked.
He had been planning this moment for weeks after he had received Neville and Hannah's blessing to do it.
"What do you mean?" Susan asked her brow furrowing.
"Do you think people will say that about us on our wedding day? Harry repeated.
"We're not even engaged, Harry! What--?” Susan stopped talking as Harry dropped down to one knee in front of her.
Taking her hand, Harry said, "Susan Amelia Bones, you are like the sunshine, and you've made my life brighter. I never thought I could love someone as much as I love you, and I want you to always be mine, as I am yours. Will you marry me?"
"Yes," Susan said as she wiped away a few tears that had spilled down her cheeks.
Harry smiled and opened up a small jewellery box.
"Oh my, that's beautiful, Harry," Susan said admiring her new engagement ring.
Nestled in gold silk was a thin silver band encrusted with diamonds, and large circular yellow stone in the middle.
"The stone is a yellow diamond, and the rest are clear diamonds which go all the way around the band. I found it in my family's vault and thought that you would like it," Harry informed her nervously.
"I love it, Harry," Susan told him as she leaned down and kissed him gently.
Harry's smile got wider.
He took the ring out of the box and placed it on her finger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for her.
Harry had a feeling in his soul which said everything had been leading up to this moment. It didn't matter if the heavens opened, or if people didn't like it; all that mattered was that Susan loved him, and that she was his sunshine on his darkest days.
