New tutorial: Killfile for Friends pages

Oct 01, 2005 20:54

This is in response to Carrie's earlier post. I opted to use a theme layer instead of a layout layer, which follows the idea of lithiana's comments killfile tutorial. I think I've listed all the layouts that can use this customization, although I might be wrong. Also, any way to neaten up the long list ( Read more... )

What's the point? Isn't it easier to just take the user off your friends list, or off the default view?

This can hide entries by certain community posters, or posters on friendsfriends. Carrie asked for this tutorial, too, and there's discussion on why this in the comments.

Oh, it's for communities. Still seems like a waste of effort to me, when it's easier to just scroll up or not friend people/communities, but whatever.

If it's a community you're really interested in, but rather not see entries from one person, then this is a better option than just missing out on the community all together. Plus, never hurts to have the tutorial there for those who want it.

Now, the entries by this user are not printed.

Keeping the same pluralisation as you used before, this should be "Now, entries by these users are not printed." (Or "not displayed".) So that real users don't get killfiled, it might also be good to have usernames such as "exampleusername" and "test" as username examples.

I'm not a docadmin, but it'd probably be best to remove "usenet", as it's not affiliated with LJ ;)

You know, it seems weird to me too, but actually that's the way that lithiana did it in her S2HowTo tutorial on comments killfiles. Weird, huh? So I figured since there was a precedent, it couldn't be totally taboo.

Huh. Well, I guess it's okay then!

There's a limit on characters in the title, so your long title won't fit in... Here's how we do this, for example: "[paid][SG, unearth, punq, TI, mag, NP, boxer, comp, FS, nebula] Reversing the order of the entries" [paidaccount] is shortened too, because if it was all spelled out it wouldn't fit.

I'm now checking which layouts this would work on. It won't work on 'A Novel Conundrum', because this layout also has the skiplinks within the print_body method. The same for Classic, Component, Generator and Tranquility II. Clean and Simple has some extra HTML in the print_body, which this function would be removing. Cuteness Attack has a lot of stuff.

so, what remains:

The Boxer, Flexible Squares, Magazine, Nebula, Notepad, Punquin Elegant, A Studry Gesture, Tabular Indent, Unearthed

I know it definitely works in Generator, because I originally tested in in Generator. I'll have to test the rest to make sure.

All I'm saying is that Generator has skiplinks on the bottom on the page. These skiplinks are included in the code for RecentPage::print_body() rather than a separate function. Your function does not contain skiplinks, so it would remove the skiplinks from the bottom of Generator. I have checked the code of each layout to see what code they have that is not in your function and listed my findings above.

That is the killfiling may work, but the skiplinks will be gone.
