So, in my brain, people I talk to only on the internet live Far Away. Thus, my automatic reaction when I see these is ":o hey! That looks SO much like Alaska!" I are a nerd.
These all remind me of my kid-dom, very much. Funny the things you grow up with. :)
Not reeeeally. We had a few dogs for a while when I was pretty small; I think Dad got them in barter for some work he did on someone's house. I remember two of them were named Ruby and Galena, and that the sled most often tipped over when I was in it for a reason nobody could quite explain. I was magical
( ... )
Last year was my first time really around sled dogs. And like you, I was really nervous about it. I grew up with house dogs but not rambunctious sled dogs. But I got to see how friendly they are and just so full of life and now I think they're great. I love getting to love on Jan's dogs when I visit - they are all so different! I haven't got them all memorized yet - she has over 50 I think. O_O; Though Trey can draw maps of all the dogs in her sleep and list them easily.
Do you still like to do anything outdoors in winter? We used to downhill ski all the time but I have crap skiis and haven't been in awhile. I really like sledding (plastic toboggan). Trey and I went last spring up at Hatcher Pass where they keep a section of mountain groomed for it. WOW was it fun! XD
Heh, Jan and I aren't related. Trey handled for her last year and we all became good friends (I visited a lot). And yeah, Jan owns over 50 dogs. She's in the medical field, works for an oil company so she makes enough money to afford to have them all and not mush professionally. :)
Yeah, Eli looks more wolflike than some dogs that DO have wolf in them! He doesn't have any. He's a sweetie-pie.
ROFL! Ever since I became friends with Trey in 1998 my spelling has been totally messed up. Mind, we used to write PAGES of emails on a daily basis and after awhile of reading British English your spelling gets royally screwed. Not only do I have rogue "U"s slipping in, my z's get swapped out for s's as well. XD
Oooh, great pictures! I think my favorites have to be the first two, both of you on the sled together waving and looking so at home in the snow. How long did you spend actually mushing?
Tis actually a 4-wheeler, not a sled, I am afraid. Not enough snow for runners just yet. :) Trey can tell you all the differences between using a 4-wheeler vs. a sled. I have been on both (and I got to mush myself!) and a sled is way more fun but its much easier to control, slow down or stop a team with a heavy 4-wheeler if you need to. ;)
We went on a 6-mile loop, which takes about a half hour to do, but set-up and take-down (harnessing dogs, etc) takes time. Jan's dogs don't get run all year round due to the heat in the summer, so at the beginning of the season you start out with short runs like this and work your way up to longer runs. At the end of last season Trey was doing 24 mile runs, which Trey says took roughly an hour to and hour and a half, but it depends because you may have to stop a lot to untangle dogs, and at the beginning of the season they aren't as in shape so runs take longer anyway.
Yar, who needs a ShopVac when you have Chip? Although I hear the disposal mechanism leaves something to be desired.
Thanksgiving. Well, apparently we are having an early Thanksgiving tomorrow with Pop's side of the family because Grandma Laura is leaving the state before the real holiday. I dunno about mom's plans - we're probably going to have our own small dinner here at mom's and invite Grandma Gerry over or something. I haven't asked. What are your plans?
Been up to anything interesting lately? Stayin' outta trouble? ;) You ought to come out to the Valley some weekend and we can do a game day or something.
BTW - was "The Lion King" the big show you had to sit on?
