Oh, Marcellus.

I appear to be writing a sequel. In which Victoria is Reasonable, and everyone else is completely At Sea.

(And have an idea for a scene, ten or twenty years later, when the Red Company take a contract from Narnia, and Marcellus is the one to fufil it. When they meet up with the Narnians, the Narnian commander, a tall dark man, looks him up and down, and punches him in the jaw.

"That's from Susanna," he says, and helps him back up again, and all the members of the Red Company who were about to attack him settle down as Marcellus says, thoughtfully, "I suppose I deserved that," then hugs him.)

Marcellus was not, perhaps, thinking clearly. And I have the slight feeling that this may have been the incident that stretched even Victoria's reasonability to breaking points, because Marcellus was an heir. (Alambil, of course, probably took a horse and went after Marcellus as soon as Valentine woke her up by, you know, breaking down her door. It is a three day ride to the Narnian border...)

Marcellus's return to Narnia involves a lot of getting hit and hugged, I think...

Yes, but, as Victoria is saying in the aftermath fic, Susanna's older than Marcellus and Val, and she's obviously given up her position in the succession (though not her children's). Which would suggest that its possible, but that Marcellus forgot.

Alambil is doing a lot of storming around.

His subordinates are most confused.

Marcellus didn't forget -- he wrote a letter. On the other hand, said letter was not witnessed, so there are a few questions about its legitimacy, and the palace isn't that far off calling him "majesty" rather than "highness" -- Victoria's abdication and the coronation are supposed to be within the week. But the moment he contracts with the Company, it's official by Natarene law and precedent. (Sometimes, awkward elder children are forced into the Company to stop them inheriting, but it's not that common.)

I sense that the entirety of the palace has been thrown into a state of confusion, and te remaining members of Marcellus's Guard are being questioned intently.

It is very possible that Marcellus has the worst timing ever.

Also, what is it with Pevensies and the Red Company! When they get fed up they're all just like 'OFF TO JOIN THE RED COMPANY, NEVER COMING BACK.'

And then get burnt when they die! :'(

He was possibly not thinking clearly. At all. AT ALL.

Not always! Sometimes they run off and join Ansketts pirate ships. The Red Company is for the landlubbers. (It's like joining the Marines. Or the French Foreign Legion.)
