(OTA) I've Swallowed a Secret Burning Thread

The sign on the door of the salle said there was to be no training until Monday at the earliest. The note on Tally's apartment door said she was out. The servants have been given three conflicting stories about where she'll be, including the tale that she's skipped to the Outside for a week in Paris ( Read more... )

The Paris story had gotten a skeptically raised eyebrow, but the Two had just shrugged, and so Avery had continued her investigation until she found the right servant. And eventually, she did, and had Drusilla, the sorrel quarter horse mare she'd bought a month after becoming Jack herself, saddled so she could ride out.

"When I got the news," she tells Tally as she dismounts and ties Drusilla up, "there was an unbelievable amount of cake baking happening."

"The news is out and open? Fuckitall, I'm glad I ran, then. Though I'm sure rumors will spread." Maybe even the Paris story, if she's lucky. She gestures to a brown leather pack, glancing up at Avery from her seat by the fire. "Marshmallows are in there if you want to stay for a bit. I need to plumb your brains on more than one topic."

"Just among the servants, for the most part. But they talk in the kitchens, and I still have enough friends there that I end up hearing it nearly as quickly." Avery pats Dru's muzzle before coming over and plopping next to Tally.

She spears a marshmallow on a skewer before she speaks. "Should I offer congratulations or condolences first?" She's joking. Really, she's joking.

But there might be some truth in there, too.

"I went on a date the other night." She's reasonably sure that Diamond servants haven't been whispering about that one, so she pulls it out because...

...because she's feeling off-balance and she's mildly sure that the idea of her dating again would probably throw Avery off-balance and she wants to not be the only one off-balance here. Nevermind that this is the official death of Avery's dream of being a Face, at least for the moment.

Insomniac wandering -- it happens. A lot more than Amy would ever confess, actually. Most nights she can keep herself in the castle, at least, but not tonight, which is her explanation for being outside in a striped cardigan and way-too-short-for-her shorts, of course. And when she sees smoke, she follows it -- worried that something is wrong. The smell of cooking meat when she's close enough sets her to running. In her favorite pair of Madden boots, she's running across hills and walkways and roads until she gets to...Tally's little camp.

What.

"...Oh, I didn't know you were out here. Um. Hi?"

Way to be awkward, Amy. Good job.

"Hi." She blinks up at Amy over the warm glow of the fire. By now she's been out here for a full day and looks like it, hair in a mess of elf-locks, dirt on face and hands. There's a rabbit over the fire, almost to the point of doneness. "Want some?"

It's about all she can think of to say, because she wants things to be normal and simple for just a bit more. To be Tally, not The Jack Of Diamonds, especially with Amy.

"I've got some apples and cinnamon and marshmallows if you want something sweet instead."

It's been...a long time since Amy had meat that was cooked over a fire. Really, it's a little warm outside for a fire, but it smells damn good, so she nods and sits. "Yeah, actually. It smells good and I haven't eaten something freshly hunted in a while."

Crossing her legs, she tips her head and looks over at Tally.

"Word is that you've disappeared. What're you hiding from?" That's Amy -- direct to the point, a little harsh sometimes. She sounds a bit worried, at least.

"Everything." And that's not Tally at all. Evasive doesn't suit her, and she blushes vividly as she cuts off a leg for Amy. "I'm okay, though."

She offers Amy the leg and takes one for herself. "You ever want to go hunting or something, ask. Mkay?"

She was going out somewhere. The place didn't really matter for Rowan, because she was going on her own; it usually meant she would end up leaving someone bloody. Or that she would wake up in her bed (hopefully) and get back to work. Just another night.

But then again, maybe not. The fire caught her eye, and moments later she was closing in, eyeing the tent with curiosity. This better be worth her night.

"Who lives?" She called in a strong, yet not precisely loud shout. It was a silly way to ask for people, but it seemed to fit the strange moment.

"Atalanta Hawkins of Diamonds. Who comes?" That seemed the best response at the moment. The voice wasn't one she recognized, but...why not? Let's play along and see what merry mischief may be found this evening at her camp.

That was a totally regal response. Shrugging, Rowan kept walking.

"Rowan Justice of...Hearts." It sounded silly when she said it. Why it sounded silly when she said it? That was not fair.

"Uh, you're the Ten right? I'm an Eight." She was almost there now.

"Actually, I was the Nine." She chuckles. "Are you staying for dinner, or just visiting to make sure I don't burn the whole place down?"
