Hanna practically ran all the way to his apartment, but even that wasn't fast enough. He needed to know, and he needed to know nowHe popped the cap off his sharpie and quickly scribbled something on his palm as he walked. It was a simple glow rune; his excuse for a flash light. The simplest of the simple runes. And he knew it well enough to write

"Sorry about that," he finally managed to choke out. Never mind that this supposed 'dragging feet' was totally her fault. Mixed signals much? "We normally have a bit more to go off of when we get a case like this. If you had a bit more specific instructions for us I'm sure it'd go a lot faster."
And then you could get the fuck out, Hanna silently thought. His clenching fists were the only visible betrayer of his forced calm, and he was about to start bouncing on his heels in frustration. She was gonna kill him, she was gonna spare him, she was gonna chop off his legs, she was gonna hire him, goddamnit, what did this lady want?

I stopped and walked back as she gave her lecture, my face expressionless. At least she hadn't stopped my going back to Hanna. I stood beside him this time, not in front. The gesture had been made, and now there was nothing to do but wait.
Villains loved to talk, though they didn't say much. The sooner she was through, the sooner she would make her grand exit, and we could get on with ridding ourselves of her and her... disruption.

She paused, examining her nails briefly before looking back up at them from under her lashes.
"So you'll have to forgive me feeling a bit irritable at your lack of progress. Since I believe my associates made it clear this was a very serious matter."

"Ooooooh," he said aloud as well. "This is about that bat lady again?" Hanna's shoulder's slumped in slight disappointment. Seriously. Again. "I, ah, hm. Right. I'll get right back on that. Promise. She's just, you know, hard to find since I know nothing about her, but it's at the top of my to-do list now." He felt a little ramblely, but if she was just here to warn him about Adelaide then he'd say whatever it took to convince her he was on the job.
Ah, but he couldn't exactly rearrange his to-do list right at that moment. "Just as soon as I've fixed this bit of trouble I've been having with my runes," he amended. "... You wouldn't happen to have anything to do with that, would you?"
Fucking with his magic was not exactly conducive to getting him to be productive, after all.

She stood and walked towards them, her dress swirling liquid around her ankles.
"...And Mr. Cross..." she said quietly, looking slowly from him to the zombie and then back again, "...should I feel you are not working hard enough...well. I shall have to drop another little 'incentive' to motivate you. So please...do your best. I think you'll find my first little present quite...inspiring."
She stepped to one side, sparing Hanna one last sideways look as she walked out. Without turning, she added:
"In the meantime - I do believe your little troupe is missing its third Musketeer."

Hanna's breath stopped.
"Conrad..!"
He was running out of there as fast as his sneakers could.
