The Examination: Topaz_Eyes

Sep 06, 2007 12:48

The first time I was aware of Topaz_Eyes it was as if she’d burst onto the fandom fully formed -- she had good ideas, good recs and good fic all in one package. And she had a strong handle on the characters from the start.

From her second completed Housefic, Dances With Motorbike

Everyone lied. That was a given. Wilson didn't lie, really, except to his ( Read more... )

I'd love to hear a bit more about these intriguing responses:

1. I have observed that if one has a particular pairing preference in one fandom, she will often seek out a similar dynamic in another fandom.

Do you find there are common issues that are addressed with the favourite pairings across fandoms that you mentioned above? I am wondering if there are similar aspects to the relationships which fans want to develop more fully.

2. There's an element of impending tragedy in each of these, which I'm drawn to.

What do you personally find *is* the draw of tragedy (or the impending variety)? It is so popular across fandoms.

Do you find there are common issues that are addressed with the favourite pairings across fandoms that you mentioned above? I am wondering if there are similar aspects to the relationships which fans want to develop more fully.

One common issue I find, is one character's relative emotional distance when compared to the other. (The way I refer to pairings, is that the first character in the pairing is the more distant one: Remus, House, Jack, Ennis, The Doctor, are emotionally distant in canon.) The second character may or may not be as distant, but he/she is usually better at communicating what he/she needs. The appeal lies in how they communicate with each other; how they succeed, or fail, at understanding each other. Like in real life, I suppose. *g*

The second common issue, is how well the characters complement each other; how they balance each other. They fit together so well that the pairing could be considered to represent one full person.

What do you personally find *is* the draw of tragedy (or the impending variety)? ( ... )

I was going to ask "why don't you write any crossovers?", but then I saw that last line, so now I'm crossing my fingers and wishing you luck :-)

Instead, I'll ask: 1. How invested are you in House these days? and 2. Do you find yourself feeling equally fannish about different fandoms at the same time, or do they take turns?

Just as an aside, my very first (and unfinished) fanfic was an X-Files/Chicago Hope crossover. I love crossovers, but I expect mine would be really long, just to fit everything in.

1. How invested are you in House these days?

These days, not so much. :-\ I'm still around, reading and commenting and chatting. OTOH, this writer's block, and some personal issues, have sidelined the writing for a while. House is still my primary fandom.

2. Do you find yourself feeling equally fannish about different fandoms at the same time, or do they take turns? They take turns. Earlier this year, I thought I was done with 24, for example, then wrote and posted two 24 fics. It depends on a lot of things. Harry Potter wrapped up its canon with the 7th book, and everyone's fate is known, so I'm not as motivated to write HP fic as I was when I first started in fandom, just before HBP. But given the right circumstances, I can see myself picking up HP fic again. So, you can take the girl out of fandom, but you can't take the fandom out of the girl ( ... )

I want to thank Topaz Eyes for all her great fics--but chiefly for her REc List. It's what drew me into this fandom, and it's a great service to serious fic readers. It's kind of its own Hall of Fame list and I wondered if the mods thought there might be a place to link to it from HouseFic Meta or the Hall o' Fame? Can you nominate a rec list for the Hall of Fame?????

I'm also always pleased to meet another writer who labors for weeks or months on a fic, and has a ton of unfinished work. The time and trouble you take shows in your writing--always very polished. Little Boy Blue is one of my favorites.

The only question I have for you is whether other writers have influenced you in the House fanfic world?

I'm always happy to know that readers find my rec list useful, so thank you. :-) LJ is not an easy place to navigate when trying to find fic, because it's scattered across so many journals.

The only question I have for you is whether other writers have influenced you in the House fanfic world?

Oh, absolutely. There is a huge wealth of writing talent in House fandom, especially gen writers. And they set the bar high. I'm always amazed by their creativity and vision. Sometimes, I admit I'm envious too, because they make it look so easy. And the House writers are very supportive, which is even better. :-)

Often I think fanfic writers are better at incorporating the medical aspects.

Anyone who's ever had you as a first reader of a story in progress gets an admirable education in how to do that right. (And many thanks for all the times you've helped me out.)

It's not really that common to come across someone who is very adept with science and also an exceptional writer. You are, though. Was there a moment in childhood when you fell in love with words, and what were some of your early influences/loves in reading?

Glad to be of help. :-) (If I get overbearing, I hope you'll let me know!)

Was there a moment in childhood when you fell in love with words, and what were some of your early influences/loves in reading?I loved/love reading, and spent as much time as I could with books. I read anything I could get my hands on. Nancy Drew, The Bobbsey Twins, Trixie Belden, the Cherry Ames series, E.B. White, L.M. Montgomery, Pippi Longstocking, Star Trek novels, books from the Scholastic reading program, medical books, encyclopedia, whatever there was (except for maybe Westerns). When I was older I started snitching my mother's Harlequin romances. As a teen I fell in love with Timothy Findley and Margaret Atwood's work, and read Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton. Some of my favorite reading was X-Men comics ( ... )
