DIfferential diagnosis, people: Blow the Candles Out

Dec 13, 2005 00:18

The first nomination for the House Fiction Hall of Fame is, not surprisingly, "Blow the Candles Out," written by Syal and nominated by many people.

This thread is to pick the story apart: what you like, what you don't like, what makes it a classic or not. We're upgrading to a paid account so we can do a real poll for the actual voting at the end of the week.

And nominations are still open.

Author: Syal

Rating: PG-13 with a hint of slash

Synopsis: It's Wilson's birthday, and while Julie may not have a clue about what he wants, House does.

Nominated By: Namasteyoga

Why it should be in a Housefic Hall of Fame: This was one of the first pieces of Housefic I read and it set a high bar for writers that were to come. Appearing barely two months after "House" premiered, Syal perfectly captured the characters, the situations and emotions of the show. The Wilson presented here has a depth of sorrow, confusion and resignation we hadn't really seen on the show up to that point, while we get a glimpse at the humanity we all know dwells within House.

Sample: Wilson waits for House to leave, but he doesn't. Instead he steps forward and gives Wilson a one-armed hug, rubbing gently at the small of his back. "It's my one hug of the year. Don't you feel lucky."

Wilson breathes in the scent of his hair. It's sharp and vaguely manly, but clean. And comforting. "This is only half a hug."
