The Examination: Snark-b8it

Too often, elements of fandom seem to draw lines of demarcation around themselves -- around a specific ‘ship or a lack of a ‘ship, around a specific take on a character, or a specific discussion forum. It’s always good to find fic and writers who can reach across those lines.

snark_b8it gives us glimpses of the characters from a different point of view. ( Read more... )

This is great. Your Cameron rocks. Your H/Ca is even better. So I have a question, if that's cool...

I suppose by the time I’d got to the fandom, lots of people had already covered his addiction and most of those had done it better than I could have done, so I tried to do something a bit different. I always like to try stuff that’s a bit weird.

Would you ever like to try the stuff that's already been covered? Take on more ubiquitous fanfic plots through your own lens, maybe?

And I like how you overcome writer's block. :)

Hey, thanks for your kind words. Regarding your question - I've never really thought about it. All of the addiction stories I have read have been really good so I don't feel like I need to add my two cents. I do like to try stuff that's not been done before so I suppose if I did do an addiction story, I would try and do it AU perhaps, and mix it up a bit. I have no plans to though, I think it's been done to death in canon and the fan fic world.

Thanks for answering! I have another question now; I hope that's okay.

By "stuff" do you mean a plot or a character conclusion? Your stories seem too tackle both, which I like. When you put a story together, do you consider plot first and its effects on a character, or do you want to see a reaction from a character and figure out what sorts of events will cause that reaction? I'm just wondering which angle of attack you have in writing. Or are you like me and just sort of follow your nose? ;)

Also, what advice if any would you have for someone who's not used to writing Cameron? I like what you said above about the way she draws things out of House.

You are definitely one of the only writers whose Cameron I will read without hesitation. While I don't particularly like her on the show, most fanfic writers either make her an uberbitch or a whiny starry-eyed 12-year-old.

I think Cameron is all kinds of messed up, not as messed up as The Joker perhaps, but I think anyone that nice, or, anyone who wants people to think she’s that nice, has some issues. House is right when he says no one should care that much; humans just aren’t built to care about everyone and everything all of the time, the fact that Cameron is trying to, makes me wonder about her, what she’s hiding and why she cares what other people think.
In light of that, I find it interesting that you don't particularly care about Wilson. Isn't that a description of Wilson as well as of Cameron? Why do you think you're drawn to these qualities in her and not in in him?

I do care about Wilson, and the show wouldn’t be the same without him, I just don’t like him sometimes. Sometimes I think he’s great and he’s had some of the funniest moments on the show. I do enjoy his back and forth with House. I have no problem with slash either, and I honestly would be intrigued to see them put House and Wilson together on screen. I’m all for it, I think it’d be awesome. I don’t think the Fox network has the balls to do it though ( ... )
