Cuddy has always prided herself on how well she knows House. The only person who might possibly know him better is Wilson, and she feels like she has an advantage, having known and dated him in college. So when they got together, she thought it'd be, well, not easy, necessarily, but comfortable. Like slipping on a your favorite pair of gloves, after you left them in your coat pocket last year and forgot where they were

It isn't. It's House himself, holding a bouquet of roses and looking surprisingly sheepish. "Never mind, he's fine," she says into the phone, nearly crying with relief, and hangs up

She sniffs her own shirt, which has the same dirty-wet smell, before pulling it over her head and adding it to the load. She continues removing her clothes, bringing them with her as she walks down the hall, and finds herself another set of pajamas. No point in dressing up tonight- angry sex has never been her thing

“I couldn’t let you die. If you’d been anyone else, I’d have at least told you about the surgery. But I knew you, and I knew you weren’t going to listen. I also knew you were smart enough to stop us if you knew we were planning on it,” Cuddy admits.

“Like I said, I understand,” House says, sounding uncomfortable.

“No, I don’t think you do. I knew you were smart enough to stop the surgery. I also knew you were smart enough to know what I’d done. I expected a law suit. The hospital lawyer was already preparing for it when you woke up. I was researching getting a realtor’s license, just in case.”

“You did it anyway?” House asks.

“I couldn’t let you die. Even knowing how much you’d hate being crippled, I couldn’t let you die,” she tells him, her voice almost cracking.

“Pretty selfish, isn’t it? Caring more about whether you want me alive than whether my life will be worth living?” House’s tone is borderline cruel, but Cuddy doesn’t rise to the bait
