In the common room

Jul 04, 2006 21:30

Tom has not been in the mood to do much of anything in the past few days besides spending time with Door and the children. He finds he's still having a hard time making any kind of decisions. If he's not careful, he'll lose several minutes at a time just staring into space, but every day he does feel better. It's just a slow process ( Read more... )

Tom hardly needs to worry about a thank you note for Svava.

She does have access to the House of Arch, and it is an easy thing to come and check on him, now.

Svava is also careful to make sure she is not walking quietly, either.

Tom appreciates her lack of stealth. He despises feeling startled, and he hates that he feels himself being so when he least expects it.

"Hullo, Svava. I've been meaning to write you my thanks." He stands and goes to her. "It's good to see you under better circumstances."

Svava understands that. Quite easily.

She smiles, reaching her hands out to him. "Hardly any need for that, really. You're looking better- quite so. I'm glad." Blue eyes quietly look him over.

"How are you doing?"

He takes her hands, glad of the contact. "Better? I think? I'm-" He walks them over to two arm chairs. "I'm not entirely certain."

He waits till she sits, then sits down himself. "I've never been in that- that kind of situation before. So really, I don't know how I am."

The writing of thank-you notes can often be a chore, particularly when such thanks do not translate well onto paper. Merriman wasn't honestly expecting one, anyway. But he has not seen Tom around in a few days, and so in the course of his enquiries after Tom's whereabouts, Door happened to point him in the direction of the common room.

He slips into the room by way of the library, and quietly clears his throat. He is not quite sure how well Tom has recovered by this point, and startling him outright would not be a very good opening for a possible conversation.

His head turns the moment he hears movement. This is the common room, and residents come in and out whenever they like. He's kept himself here on purpose to get used to normal comings and goings of others.

"Professor Lyon," he says. He stands, closing his book. "I'm pleased to see you. I meant to write- I'm terribly sorry I haven't done so yet. I owe you my thanks."

He finds himself flailing, rather. Professor Lyon's opinion is one he's always respected. He has also been concerned about what the Professor's opinion of Tom has been.

Merriman puts up a hand, hoping to stop Tom before he can keep going. 'It's quite all right, honestly. I must say that I am thankful to see you looking so well, after your ordeal.'

He studies Tom more closely then. 'How are you feeling now? I regret having to leave you when I did, but I thought it would be better for someone to go with Mr Potter and his friends and get them to those who could look after them.'

"I'm fine," he says eagerly, automatically. Then he flinches inwardly at the lie. He reminds himself that he needn't lie to save face.

"I mean to say, I'm better than I was. Not quite fine yet, but I hope to be so soon. As to your leaving when you did, I honestly was cognizant of little going on around me by that point. But I am better now. Just not as better as I'd like to be."

'Dora's been busy, herself, spending much of her time in St. Mungo's with Bernard. But she's brought Dude and Kathleen and the kids home for the evening, and decides to stop by to see Tom before she returns to the hospital.

"Wotcher, Tom."

Tom does not even reply. He simply rushes over and sweeps 'Dora up in a hug.

"Temple and Arch, but it's good to see you."

It's quite possible he's clinging a bit. Just a bit.

"How are you? How's Bernard?"

And she hugs him back, just as tightly. "I'm fine, just fine. Bernard's on the mend. But how are you?"

"Better," he says, bravely. "What do you know about what happened?" He gestures toward the stack of Daily Prophets on the table. "I haven't- I just haven't felt like reading about it. I'd have come up, but... Well. I'm not quite ready to be in the bar just yet either."

He squeezes her hand. "Sorry. I ought to have come before now. I don't even know how Bernard got hurt. We've been rather cut off here in the House."

He doesn't say it's been his choice to be so, even though it pained him to know 'Dora and Bernard might need him. He couldn't face leaving the house yet.
