What I Just Finished Reading:
The Last Wish, by Andrej Sapkowski. I thought it got a little bit awkward and stretched with what it was trying to do near the end, but I also liked Geralt a lot better at the end of the book than the beginning. You could see more of his personality beyond 'silent deadly merc sorceror'. I'm interested in seeing what

I also read the Vanyel books as an adult, and that was my reaction too. Actually, my reaction to all of the early Lackey books :P
(Anyway, a glance at TGE fanfic gives one the impression Maia goes on to have impressive amounts of sex with pretty much everyone, so I'd say he's OK on the physical contact front. :P
Heh. He totally deserves all the hugs + everything else, though! :)
I've read the Codex Alera books, and I never fell for them the same way I did for the Dresden Files, but I do think they build up to something more interesting than just what you see in the first book. I hope they will grow on you. Books 2 and 3 were actually my least favorite of the series, and I took a longish break after them before coming back to the story. Isn't it? I'm half tempted to buy it for the cover alone. It seems to get good reviews, at least on Goodreads, so hopefully the text will hold up as well.

It's not just you. I mean, I certainly don't think people should be ashamed to write about sex, I'm just kind of puzzled that it makes up such a volume of posted fanfic now. Maybe it's just having so much of it all together in a mega-archive like AO3 instead of going through newsgroups, mailing lists, and individual author's sites so it hits you all at once?

Sites I used to hang out at, like Sons of Gondor, you knew pretty much what you were getting, whereas at, say, Stories of Arda, you weren't going to get any at all.*grin*
