Late afternoon, Mt. Pocono, PA

Trevor swerves his bike around the last of the potholes, reminding himself yet again to chew out the contractor he hired to smooth out the driveway before winter. As much as he hates to admit it, Trevor can't help but realize that Caleb had a point about not bringing his car up here. As he tries to keep the bike steady while still maintaining more ( Read more... )

Aditsan is sitting on the front porch, leaning back against the wooden railing. He's made a habit of this the past few days, despite his almost nauseating hatred of the cold. He likes the colors the trees turn in this region and watching the wildlife as they scurry about preparing for the winter that he has no doubt will be harsh.

He cuts off another slice of potato, munching on it slowly when he hears the sound, off in the distance. He turns his head thoughtfully for a few moments, brow furrowing, and then he sees him.

He goes back to his snack.

"Hey, Ad," Trevor says, unsure of himself in light of his friend's lack of reaction to his presence. "I was in the neighborhood, and I thought I'd stop by. I had to drive couple hours up the turnpike to get in the neighborhood, but..."

Trevor stops, unsure what to say and realizing that he's ripping off movie quotes in his nervousness. The ride up had been his spent thinking about Aditsan, and Trevor isn't sure what ot make of his demeanor.

"You wear the face of a stranger," he says simply, without even looking up. He slices off another piece of potato, pausing with it halfway to his mouth.

For a few moments, Aditsan is silent. Finally, he looks up from the tops of his eyes. "Forgive me, Shá-Tse`gah. I..." He goes back to staring at his food. "I did not expect to see you."

Trevor tries a tentative smile, and unstraps the groceries he brought.

"That's why they call it a surprise, Bud."

Trevor sets the bags down on the porch and sits down next to them, rooting around in one of the bags as an excuse not to look at his lover.

"I know I haven't gotten up to see you as much as you want. Things have been hectic."

Trevor pulls out an apple, holding it up to Aditsan.

"Peace offering?"

Trevor starts to frown, his heart twitching at the loneliness on Aditsan's face, and opens his mouth to speak, then closes it, unsure of how to respond. He knows on one hand that taking a pity offer sucks, but the thought of Aditsan sitting here all alone, all the time, makes him want to cry.

"Come back to the city with me," Trevor tells him suddenly, springing to his feet as he holds Aditsan to keep him from falling. "We can keep this place, but in Metropolis, you can meet people. I even know a group of people who won't look at you twice for being lin."

Aditsan stares at him, flinching minutely at the offer as he takes a step back. He stares a bit longer before finally walking off towards the kitchen wordlessly.

Trevor follows, more unsure than ever how to proceed.

"Okay," he starts, choosing his words as carefully as he can. "Obviously that's a bad plan that makes you unhappy, so we're gonna go ahead and call that a plan that needs to die, but I have to ask: Why? I know you hate being alone up here."

With a sigh, Aditsan gets himself a glass of water, staring into it with his back to Trevor. You know nothing of how hastiin live. You barely understand their world. The most basic of man's everyday life escapes you. You can not decipher their written word, and even beyond all of that, you technically do not exist to them. And if you go with him, you will eventually walk amongst them, and become one of them. If I am cursed, then I shall at least not go quietly.

"I am lin," he finally says. "I have no place in hastiin's world. I never will."

Trevor watches Aditsan go, searching for words of his own. Finally he comes over to Aditsan, reaching up to hug him as best he can.

"Maybe some day we can find a way to fix this. Who knows? Caleb doesn't dislike you, he just doesn't know you enough to trust you. Maybe he can help."

Aditsan's brow furrows as he looks down at Trevor. A smile slowly works its way up his face as realization hits him. "Yes! Chindi-Caleb is a mage! It is infernal magic, to be sure, but perhaps that is just what is needed!"

He pulls Trevor into a tight hug, before suddenly realizing he's lifted him off the ground. Slightly embarassed but no less enthused, he puts him carefully back on his feet. "Oh, to be lin again... even if not amongst my brethren, but to return to my people... do you really think he would, Shá-Tse`gah? Do you think he could do it?"

Trevor opens his mouth and shuts it several times, then looks up at Aditsan again, trying to look hopeful.

"I honestly can't say what Caleb can and can't do, but I'm sure I can get him to try."

Aditsan puts his hand on Trevor's shoulders, gripping him tightly. "Thank you! You have no idea what this means to me. To return to the mesas, the high plateaus of the deserts..."

He gets a wistfully happy look on his face. "You should see it one day. The skies are of deepest blue, and the mountains in the distance-- oh, how I've missed the mountains. They are nothing like here. They rise like giants in the horizon, timeless and strong. The sun sets in shades of blazing fire behind them. And--"

He stops, the smile suddenly leaving his face. "But... I will not see you again... will I?"
