Paperless Check-ins?

Nov 13, 2009 10:27

Is anyone using NiteVision with the signature pads and driver's license scanners? I've got them hooked up in hopes of being able to do paperless check-ins, but I'm having a LOT of trouble with the driver's license scanners- they scan Wyoming licenses correctly about 1 time out of 10. Remco says it's a calibration issue, but I calibrate and ( Read more... )

Why on earth would you need a scan of someone's license? I think I would not stay at a hotel that requested a scan of my license. That's like identity theft waiting to happen.

I think newer licenses have a bar code on the back and if you scan it, it fills in all the info on the front: name, address, whatever is needed for what you're doing.

Unfortunately, our scanners do character recognition on the scanned image. Do it badly, it seems.

As for why we scan it, it (in theory) leads to a quicker check in, since there is no paper work to fill out. As for identity theft- we _already_ have their credit card number ...

Credit cards can be canceled. With address and name on the folio someone could probably attempt to take out some sort of credit in someone's name but would not be very successful. With a photo scan of their license you may be able to recreate it with your photo and do some real damage. Trying to talk someone out of being suspicious of you for wanting to do it seems like it would eat up all the time you're saving.

I've never heard of NiteVision/any hotel system like this that I can remember so I can't offer help unfortunately, but thats sounds so much easier...until you get the people who don't want to hand over their license.

Personally I think it'd be easier to steal cc information than anything from a dl. I mean a quick look at the back would give you the security code to buy online. Sure if you used your address as the shipping address you'd get caught most likely, but still.

Just thinking of all the money/paper this system would save is great. My hotel barely recycles so this would be nice.

That is the hope. If I can get it to run like I want it to, we'll use 2/3 less paper.

Wow 2/3. That'd be amazing. I hope you work out all the kinks.

We only recently even started recycling and we only do it at the FD with paper. We fill up boxes of paper we don't need like crazy. I wish we could just eliminate the use for that paper to begin with like your hotel is trying to do.

I don't drive/have a licence. Would I be allowed to stay at your hotel?!

It's a not a requirement, just a way tomake check-ins go faster/smoother. Eventually, lol.

I dunno... I think I'd be just as leery as those who've already commented, but then again, I've heard of places that wanted to take photocopies of people's ID, so who knows...

Two additional pieces of equipment- a small scanner for drivers licenses, and an electronic signature pad. Both are small and easy to work into the front desk area. The only weird thing about the signature pad is that the electronic pens have ink in them! So our pads are already getting marked up. REMCO can tell you more if you talk to your sales rep.

When it works 100%, it's really nifty.

Sure sounds Awesome. I didn't know NiteVision was capable of that! I really, REALLY don't see us going that route, though. I'd be on the fence about it, anyway. I kinda like having a paper trail.

We've had some issues so far with the computers suddenly failing to recognize that the scanners and signature pads were attached, but a reboot takes care of that. And Wyoming licenses are still difficult for the scanners to read, oddly enough. Otherwise, it's going pretty awesome right now.
