i totally claim credit for both of those LOVED's. whether or not it's due. i also tried to read "confessions" and got about a page and a half in before quitting.
my favorite mark twain: pudd'nhead wilson and connecticut yankee in king arthur's court
my most favorite flannery o'connor short stories: "revelation," "parker's back," "a temple of the holy ghost"
i love david sedaris and lee smith (and while family linen is great, i think the devil's dream might be my favorite ... but i have this thing about the southern/appalachian woman as artist, so ... yeah).
might i also suggest, if you haven't read it, the curious incident of the dog in the night time. it's not so much a memoir, but the writing is sedaris-esque and it's a really good book.
also, jane yolen is fantastic. i hope you've read the devil's arithmetic already.
and be prepared with the entire tomorrow when the war began series on hand because you will HAVE TO KNOW what happens next. marsden also has started a new series call the ellie chronicles that is sort of a continuation of the first series; i know at least one book is out.
I have read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" recently and enjoyed it. I have read the devil's arithmetic when I was younger, or my mom read it to me. I've enjoyed some of Jane Yolen's picture books so I figured I'd give more of her chapter type books and young adult books a chance too. Thanks for the suggestions! I added the Marsden books because you had recommended them on decapolis.
with jasper fforde, start with the eyre affair. it was his first (that i know of) and started his thursday next series. i'm with stephie on the loves, and i'll add that i've liked everything i've read by lauren winner. i also can't believe you've never read any twain. i dunno how you got away with that. please DO write "lies my students told me." sounds pretty amazing.
oh yeah, and, inspired by your mention of young adult fiction, i'll suggest that you read the astonishing life of octavian nothing (vol. 1 as it's the only one currently out)
I got "The Big Over Easy" I'll have to see if the library has "The Eyre Affair". I was homeschooled...I got away with not reading a lot of books most poor souls are forced to read.
