Chuck
Chuck kept his eyes planted firmly on the ground. He waited for his mother to say something else, and when she didn’t, he looked up. She was just looking at him closely. Almost… studying him. “You’re serious…?” She asked darkly. Not cold, just dark, like she really wasn’t sure.
“Yeah mom… and there’s this guy… and I really like him…” Chuck said, looking at her. Everything in him wanted to stare at the ground like a coward, but he couldn’t. He would look her in the eye and be proud of who he was. Then… his mom smiled.
“Sweetie, that’s great. It’s gonna take a little while for me to get used to you liking boys and that I’ll never have a daughter in law… but a son in law would be good too…” She said supportively, smiling sweetly.
“Sooo….” She went on a little more suggestively. “Who is he?!” She asked and Chuck could feel the excitement radiating from her. He couldn’t help but laugh.
“Don’t say anything, because it’s sort of just beginning, but… it’s Sebastien…” He said, and he smiled as his heart glowed. He loved talking about Seb. He really did.
Pierre
Pierre and David had packed up everything from the project, which was almost done, and were watching a movie on the couch. Pierre found it hard to believe everything was going as good as it was. He and David were happy and everything was going perfectly. So much so, that something inside him almost knew that something was just bound to go wrong soon…
Then the phone rang. At first Pierre was afraid to pick it up, but he knew he was just being paranoid so he walked into the other room and answered it.
“Hello?” He asked in what was probably the friendliest voice he’d ever answered the phone in. He was just so happy…
“Hi sweetie…” Came a familiar voice from the other side and Pierre’s heart sunk into his stomach as his mother continued talking through his silence…
“I was just calling to see if we could come visit sometime? Your father and I…?” She asked in a voice that sounded cautious, but at the same time friendly like they were his parents, of course he would say yes.
“No.” He said simply, and thought about hanging up on her. But didn’t. And he didn’t know why.
“Listen honey, we’ve been talking to each other, and some of our friends, and we think we may have overreacted about everything. So if you give us one more chance, we have a proposition for you…” She said, leaving it empty. Pierre knew he shouldn’t listen. He knew he should just go back to the couch and cuddle with his boyfriend. But this was his mom… if it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t even be here to cuddle with David. So he gave her, not another chance, but another chance to explain why she deserved another chance…
“…What is it?” Pierre asked nervously, but was stern at the same time so she knew she wasn’t in control. He was, and always would be.
“Well sweetie… I know we haven’t been the most supportive of the life you’ve chosen for yourself, and that’s made you resent us… but we were thinking that maybe we could be a family again. I know you’re almost ready to graduate but it doesn’t matter. We’ll get a brand new house, or maybe a used one, but still. YOU can pick the house, any one you want. And you have every right to live in that house and be attracted to boys…” She said, but she left the statement loaded. Pierre knew there was something she wasn’t telling him.
“What’s the catch?” He asked, and it came out sounding angry, cause when it came down to it… he was getting angry because he knew something was going to come out of her mouth that reminded him why he didn’t live with her to begin with.
“Well sweetie… you see, if we’re all gonna start this brand new life… it needs to be completely new, and fresh, and exciting!” She said building it up. It was gonna be bad and Pierre’s mind was yelling at him to hang up the phone before she could say it, but something stopped him. Maybe just curiosity wanting to know what it was she was proposing…
“What. Is. It.” He asked sternly, anger building up.
“I think if we want this to work, you need to leave that boy of yours.” She said sympathetically. Anger fumed up inside Pierre so fast it was like someone poured kerosene down his throat and lit a match in his stomach. He slammed his finger down on the phone, ending the call and fired it against the wall, sending pieces flying everywhere.
Pierre screamed. Quick and short, but it was loud, and sent his body spinning and falling to the ground, shaking in anger trying to control himself before he broke anything else. That’s where he stayed until David came running into the room.
David
When David heard a loud noise, with Pierre screaming, he didn’t know what to think. He jumped off the couch and rushed in, freezing in the doorway. Pierre was leaning against the wall, the phone was shattered around him. He wasn’t crying or upset or anything, but he was shaking… and he just looked really pissed. He ran to Pierre and put his hands on his shoulders trying to steady him a little. He tried to make eye contact but Pierre kept avoiding it, but finally he caught Pierre’s eyes. He was afraid for the worst…
“Pierre, what’s the matter?! Who the hell was on the phone?!” He demanded. Pierre shook his head angrily.
“My mom.” He said and a small bout of anger fumed shortly inside David. He didn’t believe in hate… but he really did hate this woman. Not because of all the things she’d said and done to him, or even to Pierre. But because of the anger and unpleasantry she caused Pierre. He hated this woman, because he hated seeing Pierre like this…
“Pierre stop. I don’t know what she asked you for, but I know you and I know you said no… right?” David asked, already knowing the answer. When Pierre looked away stubbornly and didn’t answer, David moved his head back into Pierre’s view.
“Right?” He asked stern and persistent.
“Yeah…” Pierre said weakly nodding his head slowly.
“So just leave it at that. Don’t let her get you this worked up, okay? People like that aren’t worth it. I know she’s your mom… but it’s time you stopped letting her control you…” He said looking into Pierre’s eyes. He didn’t know what to say, but he thought he did alright. Even though he could tell Pierre was still mad, he seemed to have calmed down, and they went back to the living room together…
Sebastien
When Seb had came in and lied down on his bed, he’d planned to go to sleep. But he knew that wouldn’t happen as he sat there, eyes and heart open wide, thinking about everything that had just happened to him. He had his best friend back, and made a really amazing new one… and he had… a boyfriend. He didn’t even know he wanted a boyfriend, and to be honest, he still didn’t want a boyfriend. Not in general anyways. He just wanted Chuck.
He was starting to feel tired and was going to sleep when his phone rang. He didn’t want to answer it but he couldn’t help but smile when Chuck’s name lit up the screen.
“Hey” He smiled through the word, just anticipating hearing Chuck’s voice, and when he finally did, his heart glowed.
“Hey Seb” Chuck said, sounding equally as happy.
“Whatsup?” Seb asked. He wouldn’t have been so formal with it, but obviously there was something specific Chuck wanted if he was calling at this time of night.
“Um I just thought you should know… I told my mom. About us. And she was surprisingly cool about it… but I just wanted to make sure it was okay with you.” He said. He sounded nervous. Seb couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Nothing Chuck did or said at this point could make him lose him.
“Chuck, she’s your mom. If you want to tell her, that’s your right and I’m glad she’s okay with it.” Seb said, and as he thought about him and Chuck being together… when it should be weird, he just felt happy. Happier than he’d ever felt in his life. Seb could hear Chuck exhale in relief.
“Good… well I’ll let you go to sleep. I just wanted to hear your voice.” Chuck said sweetly and it made Sebastien melt hearing him say that.
“Goodnight Chuck.” He said, and hung up. He went to bed happy that night. Not just happy about Chuck. Happy that David and Pierre were happy, happy that Jeff was happy with the child, and happy that everything was finally going okay for everyone.
One Month Later
David
David sat in the auditorium with Chuck and Sebastien and he was glad they were a year younger than Pierre. He’d finally told Pierre about Portland 2 weeks back, and Pierre reacted surprisingly well. They decided when Pierre graduated, which was… well, now, he would continue working at the little store he worked at now for a year while David finished his grade 12 with Seb and Chuck, who were also in on the plan. Then, when the three of them graduated, they would all go to Portland, together. Pierre had already started saving money up for a two bedroom apartment and David Chuck and Sebastien were all getting part time jobs to help pay for other expenses. Things were really going to be perfect…
Just as the grad ceremony was about to begin, David’s phone buzzed in his pocket. Who could be texting him? All his friends were with him…
He looked at the screen and when he saw his mom’s number, he instantly panicked, knowing she wouldn’t be texting him unless something was wrong. He held his breath and opened the text.
His heart sunk into his chest and everything around him blackened as the words worked their way into his mind.
“Fuck.” He muttered under his breath. He didn’t know why his mother was asking him to come to the hospital “immediately” but he knew it couldn’t be anything good.
“What’s wrong?” Chuck asked, and David looked up to see him and Seb looking at him with worried eyes. He took a deep breath, looked at the stage, then back at his friends. He couldn’t believe he was about to miss this… but he had to. He pulled his camera out of his pocket and handed it to Chuck, looking down, feeling completely ashamed of what he was about to do.
“I need you to video tape the entire thing for me. I have to go.” He said, looking back up at them, tears threatening his eyes. They looked at each other then nodded and took the camera and he knew that they understood it was something important.
Pierre
Pierre was nervous to go up and accept his diploma and the award he got for the part he did on the soc project which for reasons he didn’t understand, the teacher was blown away by. He didn’t have stage freight or anything, he just knew how many of his classmates and their families were watching, and they hadn’t exactly all warmed up to his coming out…
But regardless, he heard his name called and suddenly everything was a blur as he walked out and shook the hands of his principles and teachers, and stood smiling for a moment like all the other graduates did so their parents could take pictures, but in his case, it was his boyfriend taking the pictures. Speaking of… he scanned the audience trying to find David, when he saw them. Chuck and Seb standing alone, empty seat beside them, looking guilty and proud all at the same time… videoing the whole thing with David’s camera. Pierre’s heart raced and he tried to look as graceful as possible as he exited the stage and left the auditorium, not caring that the ceremony wasn’t over. David left. Something was wrong.
He pulled off his cap and gown and ditched them in a random custodial closet so he wouldn’t stand out in the crowd as he ran in to find Seb and Chuck who spun in surprise, not expecting him to not be backstage.
“Where’s David?” He demanded, terrified of what it could be. There were literally thousands of possibilities running through his mind…
They both looked down and at each other not sure what they should say. Pierre gave them a fierce look, and they both surrendered instantly. Chuck looked down guiltily, then back at Pierre.
“He left… it seemed like an emergency and he asked me to get it all on tape. He got a text right before he left that I couldn’t read, but I think it said something about the hospital…” Chuck said.
Pierre panicked. He didn’t know what to think or do, but he knew he would never get through the day not knowing and that he had to find David and be there for him and whatever was going on. So he started running.
He knew David had drove them here and he would have Pierre’s car, so he didn’t even bother looking for it in the parking lot, he just kept running. He ran as fast as he could through town, across busy streets, not even thinking about anything except getting to David, until without even realizing it, he was in the hospital waiting room, panting, looking around.
When he didn’t see David anywhere, his heart jumped into overdrive, panicking even more, and he went to the nurses station to talk to a red-headed, middle aged nurse.
“Excuse me, could you please tell me if there’s anyone here by the name of Desrosiers? And could you maybe give me any other information you might have about it?” He asked frantically. The nurse looked hesitant. Honestly, they both knew she shouldn’t be giving out that information to him, not even knowing his name, but something in her eyes showed him she would as she silently turned to check the records on her computer. Pierre wanted to scream, it felt like it took her a lifetime. Finally she looked up.
“Um… there’s a Rayenna Desrosiers in room 204, she came in pregnant and having complications. She flat lined about 20 minutes ago, no word yet on if she or the baby made it.” She told him and normally it would have made Pierre mad the way she said it as if she was just talking about the weather, but he didn’t have time for that. He kept running.
When Pierre finally found room 204, the door was opening just as he was walking down the hall towards it and Mr. and Mrs. Desrosiers came out holding each other, crying. Not far after, came David, alone, shaking, crying, and broken. Pierre’s heart instantly shattered.
