I'm afraid you are indeed imagining it, Cait. It's from one of the Bloody Jack books, specifically Curse of the Blue Tattoo. They're pretty fun books.

Oh, yeah, lots of fun! They're all written in the first person and Jacky is kind of a spaz so it's practically worth it for the narration alone.

Jacky is sometimes accused of being a demoness, but, no, she's a 100% genuine orphan (though not of the match-selling variety).
