It's Booster's birthday! \o/ (And Michelle's and Jeff Katz's.) Yaaay.

Hey, artsy fartsy folks of the f-list. I seek opinions on those little poseable wooden figures. Like this'n'. Are they really useful, is there a certain company I should be jonesing for more than others, is hip articulation a thing that exists, is Amazon a place I should be ( Read more... )

I personally didn't find the model to be very useful when I actually had one, but it was attached to a stick and could not be manipulated quite as much. Just remember that it poses more stiffly than a person might when you're using it as a reference. Unlike humans, it also can't really bend the spine, either, which could potentially suck for certain poses.

Also yaaaay tablets.

Thanks! This fellow I also found in my search has a spine, but the reviews there make it sound like it's less flexible than normal, but I'm not sure if they're saying it as compared to people or as compared to other wooden models. The picture here makes it look pretty nice, but, well, pictures by the maker aren't always entirely trustworthy, y'know? Do you think it looks/sounds any better than the magnetic one?

Ooh, those look a little more useful. It's a little difficult to tell without having one physically around to play with, though...

Also, I was just reminded by your post to look up this. Never tried it myself, but apparently it's useful for pose references.

What's annoying about the spined ones is that they aren't sold on Amazon so I couldn't use my gift card on them. Then again, if I spend the entire gift card on a tablet, it's kind of a moot point, anyway. :V

Yeah, I've seen posemaniacs, but eehhhhh. Right now I'm looking for more flexibility and more... filling in the details myself instead of having the muscles right there for copying.

Adding a comment of COMPLETE REDUNDANCY, but Dani's got it. I'm a giant whore for those models, I love fiddling around with them to get what I want. And I'm always disappointed. I think stiff is an understatement.

I know plenty of people who use this instead because. I mean. 67 joints. Unfortunately, the cost is pretty high compared to your regular models.

Unfortunately, it also appears to be out of stock. Disappointing.

eBay, my dear. I'm sure there are others out there, this is just the only one I found on a quick search.

That. Is a lot of money. o_o If I find one cheapish, I might spring for it, but I am kind of unemployed and thus on some semblance of a budget here.

You could try, like, buildings, or robots! Kinda like engineering diagrams.

The thing about those is that they tend to be pretty detailed (and involve straight lines), which is not a thing I am terribly good at. (I also tend to enjoy redesigning robots as humans more than I do trying to draw robots. :V)
