Icon Tutorial 001
1. Start of with your image. Don't crop just yet. I used a picture of Evangeline Lilly that I got from here (great website to find some good pictures minus the nudity). Anyways, Take your picture sharpen it. Then, duplicate it twice. The layer about your base, set to Screen 100% and the one above that desaturate it and set to Soft Light 100%. Mine turn out like this:

2. Go to Layer->New Fill Layer->Solid Color. Say ok and use this pinkish color: #FFB6E5 and set that to Soft Light 100%

3. Again, go to Layer->New Fill Layer->Solid Color. Say ok and use a dark blue color: #001B70 and set to Soft Light 54%

4. Once again go to Layer->New Fill Layer->Solid Color. Say ok and use this dark green color: 00353B and set to Exclusion 50%

5. Add yet another color. Layer->New Fill Layer->Solid Color->Ok. Use this light blue color: 8FE1FF and set it to Color Burn 100%

6. Copy your base and drag it to the top and set to Overlay 51%

7. Last color layer, I promise. Layer->New Fill Layer->Solid Color->Ok. Use the light blue color again: 8FE1FF and set to Color Burn 20%

8. Now, it's time to crop. File->New->100x100 pixels, 72 Resolution. And, Crop your base. Mine looks like this:

9. This is optional but I added a curves layer. Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Curves. This are my settings:

Just keep it as Normal 100%. Mine turns out to be like this:

Looks good, right? I love the curves option, it give your image so much more depth. =)
10. You can add what ever you want to your icon. Add textures, brushes and whatnot. I decided to keep mine the way it was. This was my first icon tutorial. So, let me know what you think!
