Irony

I find it very ironic that a columnist's advice was ignored as the Clinton administration was winding down and Hillary's ambitions were ramping up. I can't recall who wrote that he thought she should run for the Senate from Illinois, her home state. She probably would have won that as easily as New York. He said she (and the public) wasn't ready for the presidency, but correctly predicted that serving in the Senate would position her to run for president in '08.

Had she run in Illinois, Obama might never have become a senator, and no one would have heard of him today.

In other news, I was downtown this morning and took myself and Chris to the Board of Elections (280 E. Broad St., old COSI building) and voted absentee. It was quick and totally painless. They have at least a dozen voting machines and lots of people manning the place. Other than filling out the card, it was all done on the computer.

It seems stupid to have so many local polling places using archaic manual systems (lots of huge printouts to check and log), inexperienced volunteers, and long lines on a single day when they could have a few central polling places in operation over a longer period. Or just mail everyone an absentee ballot and be done with it. I sat in a very boring election official training session for three hours on Monday to learn how to handle provisional voters.  We may get two dozen all day at my polling place.
