it's a very, very mad world

Dean posted this video of a verbal smackdown between a news anchor and a crazy Baptist lady which I watched with amused incredulity, but I am now seething after seeing this:

It shits me whenever a Christian says "Because the Bible said so." Sure, I can understand that there are some good teachings and I'll respect people's reverence of it but ( Read more... )

Westboro is a nutjob 'church' anonymous February 2 2011, 23:00:20 UTC
Hiya, seriously you can't take ANYTHING that that crazy and extremist Westboro church says as being Christian. That's like low fat ice cream masquerading as health food. Just because they it's so, doesn't mean it's so. (Is it just typical of me or what to make an analogy involving food?)

While I'm grateful that our church (or in my case, ex-church) would never endorse this kind of hatred in any way, i still think it instills negative attitudes towards homosexuality (and religions outside of Christianity) that are not far off from these extremists. My so-called friends who I've grown up with constantly refer to gay people and Muslims in awful, degrading terms and justify their attitudes with scripture. I can't be in an environment like that.

As for what I said in the last paragraph of my post, I was going to add that this criticism doesn't just apply to these issues that I've mentioned - it is apparent on many levels where people just blindly accept the Bible as fact and won't question any of its content even though it is obviously inconsistent and not totally applicable to our modern age.

I couldn't even watch the first video until the end because there was too much nonsensical screaming (from both sides). The second video: ugh. Ugh to it all ( ... )

If it's anything at all like his one about reading the encylopedia, I wouldn't bother.

I pretty much agree with Melissa McEwan's essay. It kind of pertains to the question I've had for a while: What makes one preacher more 'legitimate' than the next when they all claim to be speaking directly from God? It's all down to interpretation like you said but it's all the more confusing when they base their messages on the bible which in turn was written by a bunch of men thousands of years ago interpreting what they've heard from God. Which I don't really have a problem with because people have the right to believe what they want, but I'm frustrated when people won't admit to any room for error and they parade their beliefs as 'truth' and 'fact' that should be imposed on everyone ( ... )

Then on the other hand you've got people from the flip side who are like "because SCIENCE said so" with the same bile and vitriol, so I wouldn't be too quick to point the finger only at Christians. It seems to be a malady common to all humanity, regardless of creed.

It's a strange and terrifying world.

I would argue that it's hard to achieve the same amount of vitriol regarding the social issues in the videos above (homosexuality etc.) from a scientific perspective, seeing as there is no innate morality in science. I can think of arguments for evolution-based value assignation which deems certain populations "better" than others on a "natural" might-is-right kind of perspective, but the nonsense in a lot of those arguments can be effectively refuted (as religious extremism cannot), because science is essentially data-based.

I agree that arseholes show up on all sides, though.

I haven't actually watched the video not_so_l0st February 7 2011, 10:31:08 UTC
but the last line of your post reminds me of the girl in tommorrow when the war began! which by the way is a really awful movie!

I would watch the video, but I trust you that it's awful. lol. the whole world already hurts my feelings. I survive by pretending it's not happening, obviously!

Anyways Love you! miss you! blah blah!!!

Next time we get to talk I have to tell you about this one time, my so-called friends pissed me off being all lofty and judgmental about how retarded vegans and greenies are I screamed at them and stormed off in a public place, without explanation. And flew to Japan.
