July 21: EVIL DEAD attacks the NYC stage

The Deadites take Manhattan as EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL, following successful runs in Toronto and Montreal, begins an unlimited run at the New World Stages (340 West 50th Street). Previews begin Monday, October 2, and the official opening is set for Wednesday, November 1. With book and lyrics by George Reinblatt and music by Frank Cipolla, Christopher Bond, Melissa Morris and Reinblatt, the show turns Sam Raimi’s first two DEAD films into a musical comedy, with songs like “Cabin in the Woods,” “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons” and “Do the Necronomicon,” along with live blood FX (portions of the seating are designated as a “Splatter Zone”). Bond is directing the NYC incarnation with Hinton Battle, who is also choreographing the show, has won three Tony Awards for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical and played the singing demon Sweet in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER’s acclaimed “Once More, With Feeling” episode.

EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL’s New York cast includes Jennifer Byrne, Jenna Coker, Renee Klapmeyer, Amy Shute, Tom Walker, Brandon Wardell, Ryan Williams and Darryl Winslow; the makeup and special FX are created by Louis Zakarian, whose film credits include REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, DOGMA and TROMEO & JULIET. Performances will take place Mondays-Thursdays at 8 p.m., Fridays at 7:30 and 11 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 and 11 p.m.; tickets ($25-$60 Mondays-Thursdays, $35-$65 Fridays and Saturdays) can be purchased via Telecharge (www.telecharge.com or 212-239-6200) or by visiting the New World Stages box office Tuesday-Saturday from 1-7:30 p.m. and Sunday-Monday from 1-6 p.m.
