For a very brief moment I entertained the possibility that Bree was lying about his owner being bad to his slaves to help encourage Shasta to run away with him.
I've read a H&HB meta that suggested that Bree's master wanted to buy Shasta to be a sex slave. That was what Bree meant by he'd be better of dead and why the master kept referring to Shasta's beautiful but accursed white skin.
You know... that isn't a completely mad idea. I seem to recall a lot being made of Shasta's attractiveness and that it made me do a mental double take. Do you have a link to that meta?

I'm shallow so I just liked the confirmation that Shasta was hot! Then I read the meta, did a double take and realized that this made a creepy amount of sense! I never noticed it as a child, though...
I'm so sorry I took so long to reply to you. (Life: it just keeps on going. *g*) But thank you for that link! I loved the various points made, and the underlying suggestion of Bree's master being a pedophile is my new canon. (Honestly, I can buy CS Lewis allowing that sort of darkness in as a very subtle shade that children would miss.)

And now that I've tempted you, I'll succumb to temptation myself and watch "The Unicorn and the Wasp".
