I'm going through the same craigslist stuff here in Kalamazoo. I've found Facebook Marketplace to be a little better, simply because I can then look at the profiles of people who are looking for roommates.

re: apartments
you should drive through my neighborhood (i'm technically considered west side, but view it as downtown lansing) around mlk and ottawa. there are a bunch of places in there with for rent signs up and they don't look shitty.
