Today when Emily got home from school, she found an empty bag of chocolate and peanut butter chips on the living room floor. I'm confused how the cats got the bag out of the cupboard above the sink, but it seems they liked them since the bag was chewed open and ripped down the side, and there's not a chocolate or peanut butter chip to be found ( Read more... )

it's supposed to be, but (as far as i know, i could be horribly wrong) the reason it's bad for them is that it increases their heartrates like a mega suger rush, so it's not a for sure thing that they're going to get sick, like it's actually TOXIC to them. i came home one time, years ago, to find a one pound hersheys bar half-eaten on my bed. the dog was fast asleep on the floor, so i guess his heart was doing just fine.

Ahahaha oh man. Yes, chocolate is bad for cats too, though not as toxic as it can be for dogs. They should be fine so long as it wasn't like their weight in chocolate.

You will have to report on that class, chickie. I've always wanted to take one of those and never gotten around to it. Supposed to be a lot of fun *and* a helluva workout, which sounds nigh perfect to me!

Chocolate is toxic to cats, but most of them aren't stupid or food-motivated enough to eat it. Assuming the toxic dose is the same in dogs as in cats and your cats are about 10 pounds, 3 ounces of chocolate chips per cat will be toxic. Signs of toxicity can include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, difficulty walking, elevated heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, coma, and death. Clinical signs usually occur within 1-4 hours of ingestion, but the gastrointestinal effects might occur a little later. You can also see secondary pancreatitis over the next couple of days, which could manifest as vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and/or abdominal discomfort.

To summarize: you probably won't see any of the worst signs directly from the chocolate. The pancreatitis risk is real, though, and if your cats stop eating, take them to your vet.
